Black Friday

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Lyggl57uKRA#!]

Shoppers pepper spraying other shoppers.  Thugs waiting outside stores trying to steal items from successful shoppers shot one person.  It gets pretty bleak out there sometimes on our National Shopping Day and it is a good thing that law enforcement was there to help control some of those situations.  However, this next Black Friday story appears to have had an excess of law enforcement.  It is pretty violent.  It might be too much for kids especially. A reader sent me a link to the video and the article and the video is pretty rough. The story in this raw footage starts about :59 and goes to 3:25.  According to the Pocono Record,

A grandfather who tried to protect his grandson from stampeding Black Friday shoppers was hospitalized after a scuffle with police at an Arizona Walmart.

The grandfather, identified as 54-year-old Jerald Newman, was with his grandson and wife looking at video games when overeager shoppers began tearing open boxes, trying to get to the games, witnesses said. A woman was allegedly punched during the fracas.

Newman’s grandson got caught in the violence, and was nearly trampled, witnesses said. That was when his grandfather allegedly put the game he was holding into the waistband of his pants in an effort to lift the boy to safety.

Witnesses said a police officer grabbed the man and slammed him to the ground, possibly thinking he was stealing the game.

Blood streamed from Newman’s face, but witnesses said police did not believe he was hurt until they turned the man over.

One shopper who witnessed the incident called it excessive.

“They grabbed the guy, body planted him into the ground — face shatters on concrete. That’s a hard concrete floor inside Walmart,” shopper Skyler Stone said.

“All of a sudden, you see this little boy run up and wailing and yelling, ‘Grandpa, Grandpa,’ and crying his eyes out,” Stone said.

Witnesses said the man had about $600 worth of electronics that he was purchasing and was not trying to steal anything.

Buckeye police told myFOXphoenix.com that Newman began “flailing” his arms when asked about the video game in his waistband. An officer used a leg sweep and Newman fell, hitting his head, police said.

What interested me most is that the crowd not only is filming this but really pressing the officers about whether the arrest used excessive violence.  Also the officers themselves look shaken. Are the Occupy Movements causing people to question authority more? Are officers questioning themselves more?  Or, is it just the omnipresence of video recorders in people’s cameras causing a sense of accountability?

I haven’t had any first aid training in years but, unless things have changed, I don’t believe raising the guy’s head up as the police do early on in the video is at all what should be done when someone has suffered a head injury.

Me too. Why isn’t he on his side in the recovery position?

The biggest seller at Radio Shack this years is a Porky Pig doll, dressed in a university police uniform, holding a can of pepper spray. When you pull his finger he squeels “Cry Me a River”.

Fred is absolutely right, the man should NOT have been moved at all. he should have been checked to make sure he was breathing, his cervical spine should have been “married” and suported with both hands. A person that has hit their head hard enough to cause an injury could very well have had a broken neck. Moving him at all risked paralyzing him forever! They flopped him over without supporting his neck, they did nothing right to care for him. He should have had his legs elevated if anything, sitting him up was another mistake. Who trains these idiots anyway???

I need to say at this time that we had been seeing a lot of bad cop behavior lately, but by far most of the cops that I know would have done everything correctly, and it wouldn’t have even been a story. The thing that makes this a story is, that the cops were acting way, way out of accepted protocol. They need to go back to cop school, if they don’t learn better they need to get jobs somewhere else other than public safety!

The stores are creating a situation by offering limited items at very low prices. It really isn’t shopping but some sort of new sport. In the past I think they might be able to say they didn’t know what was going to happen but every year ow we hear of people getting hurt in these flash mobs they create. These are store created riots. This has to be frightening for the rent a cops as well. The whole situation as they have it set up is dangerous.

Don’t blame the stores, They’re just trying to satisfy the buying hysteria caused by Christmas. It would make more sense to ban Christmas. I’m generally against bans of any kind, but I’d support a ban of Christmas (and Thanksgiving). Were do I sign?

Poor guy, sounds like Walmart and the Buckeye PD are headed to court and about to see some negative cash flow. This is one case where I hope some attorney sticks it to ’em: Walmart for promoting the greedy frenzy and the PD for lack of training and restraint.

It’s better that the child learns about government early in life, instead of later on. It builds character and allows them to see the world for what it is at a young age, giving them a perspective that only those who live it, can know it.
Looking at all the recent “cop attacks” in media should one think maybe this is part of the PTB plan to desensitize the masses to police state. They use video games, too.

When are you saps going to get the picture? This is their “training and their restraint.”
(“PD for lack of training and restraint.”) EPD Chief Murl Harpham says this is exactly what the public wants when they NEED a “tough cop” or maybe a whole gang (squad) of tough cops.

The shocking truth about the crackdown on Occupy – Why the police violence (the Guardian- Friday 25 November 2011):

“So, when you connect the dots, properly understood, what happened this week is the first battle in a civil war; a civil war in which, for now, only one side is choosing violence. It is a battle in which members of Congress, with the collusion of the American president, sent violent, organised suppression against the people they are supposed to represent. Occupy has touched the third rail: personal congressional profits streams. Even though they are, as yet, unaware of what the implications of their movement are, those threatened by the stirrings of their dreams of reform are not.

Sadly, Americans this week have come one step closer to being true brothers and sisters of the protesters in Tahrir Square. Like them, our own national leaders, who likely see their own personal wealth under threat from transparency and reform, are now making war upon us.”

Get the picture?

Kym, I read your rebuttal, I think the media and the press are trying to protect Obama, and putting this spin on it. This action was from the top, If it goes into 2012 they feel it will hurt Obama and his reelection. Which it will.

The A T F now wants to place a band on Chore Boy Scrubbing pads, that you would use to clean your pots and pans with, The A T F says they could be used in making a silencer for a gun. It looks like the whole nation is getting paranoid, cops and Protester
alike. Without blaming on side or the other. We need to stand down. The article in the Guardian was informative but their choice of words like peaceful demonstrators and violent cops only serve to inflame and is not an agent of peace.
Here is the ATF site for silencers…….http://www.examiner.com/gun-rights-in-national/atf-classifies-chore-boy-pot-scrubber-pads-nfa-firearms
