In Wailaki, “in tche” is deer, “en tcha ga” is a buck and “doon kit tes ai” is a four point buck. This one was obviously magical.

What a beauty! So many of them out and pumped full of testosterone-buck-energy now. The low angle of the sun has me feeling so appreciative of all of the magic in this watershed and our region and you just happened to catch it just right. Thanks Kym! Has anyone been seeing (or hearing) the high flying geese heading south in the past weeks? Takes my breath away…….

He’s a healthy youngster and survived another season so far, his main worries are those pesky packs of coyotes that are growing and the stealthy mountain lion and then there is that big scar faced he bear that is aggresive towards all. I would throw in a huge bobcat I saw, but mr. cat doesn’t tackle a full grown buck, he does like the young deer though.

Hard to believe that noble beast would lower himself to vandalizing my tomatoes.

But it’s a wonderful photo that your poem brings real life to. This is a very sweet post.

He looks like he has elven fire running up him. I have some photos I shot using different settings. I’ll see which you all like best.

No! Don’t shoot, said the young Prince. Raise your bows.
But Master, he’s getting away.
said the charge d’ affairs.
He’s a special deer, said the Prince. See his golden aura, it’s a sign. I will hunt him, but I will not kill him. I will follow and see where he leads me instead.
The Prince followed the deer, keeping himself hidden behind the trees. The deer came to a cottage in the middle of the forest, with smoke coming from its chimney. He knocked on the door with his antlers. tkk tkk tkk
The cottage door swung open and the most beautiful maiden the Prince had ever seen appeared.
The deer spoke to her, his aura glowing ever brighter. She answered, laughing, and let him in, closing the door behind.

I’ve always wondered what a deer would sound like. I imagine them as deaf, speaking with their eyes and wrinkling the softness of their muzzles. But this one being magical must have a quiet velvety voice.
