Prohibition–Happy 74th Birthday

Today, PBS airs Ken Burns documentary, Prohibition. There aren’t many people who would argue we should go back to the bad old days of alcohol prohibition–crime was up but alcohol consumption didn’t go away.

Coincidentally or not, October 1st, 1934  is the day that the Marijuana Tax Act was enacted. And on the next day, October 2nd, (74 years ago today) this poor man

Samuel R. Caldwell, became the first man to be arrested for selling marijuana.  He spent two years in jail and died soon thereafter. How ironic that less than a year after alcohol prohibition was repealed, marijuana prohibition began.  I wonder if this coming year, the 75th year of cannabis prohibition, will mark the beginning of the end of this stupidity.

I saw that weenie Ken Burns deny parallels between Prohibition in the 20s and our current version on Olbermann. He used the slippery slope argument to justify why marijuana should remain illegal. he’s a putz.

I wonder the same, Kym. I guess I’m jut an old hippie. I know there are problems with cannabis, but it seems to me the problems are not so much with the plant as they are with greedy and/or irresponsible people. As your photographs clearly show, the cannabis plant is a beautiful part of our God-given world.

According to NORML =
Caldwell’s wares, two marijuana cigarettes, deeply offended Judge Foster Symes, who said: “I consider marijuana the worst of all narcotics, far worse than the use of morphine or cocaine. Under its influence men become beasts. Marijuana destroys life itself. I have no sympathy with those who sell this weed. The government is going to enforce this new law to the letter.”

The reality is that marijuana prohibition was all about money and had nothing to do with it being the “worst of all narcotics” or “destroying life itself”. The propaganda machine that invented this BS manipulated commodities, resources, and of course the media. Super wealthy elitist Wm R Heast’s greedy idea was to log the redwood forest instead of using Hemp for newspapers. Marijuana prohibition is an example of media propaganda induced hysteria.

If only more men became “beasts”.
