Times Standard Cuts Services to SoHum
Garberville business woman Charlotte Silverstein (pictured above) is not happy with the decision by The Times Standard to stop delivering papers to much of Southern Humboldt. “The Times Standard is a Humboldt County newspaper. They want our advertising dollars but now they wont even distribute the paper here in So Hum. It’s just another case of the Orphaned child of So Hum not getting the services that No Hum get. I think it’s really time to break away, remember when we were planning Sequoia County…”
Beginning August 31, the Times Standard will no longer be delivering to many rural areas in Southern Humboldt (and beyond). And now the same rural residents will no longer be able to access the Times Standard online without a hefty fee. This, of course, applies to all users of the online version but hits rural residents especially hard as they don’t have the option of receiving hard copies except by mail–which will require long drives to access especially if the postal service shuts down many of our small post offices. (Don’t forget, Phillipsville folk, the post office meeting is this Tuesday at 5.) Southern Humboldt residents which have difficulty accessing high speed internet will be further cut off from communication.
Asked if she plans to buy the Times Standard online or have it sent to her mail, Silverstein replied firmly, “No I will not purchase the paper. If they don’t support us, why should we support them.”

Nice photo of grinnin’ Charlotte. I couldn’t agree more, we are about as popular with the rest of the county as yesterdays news.
I’m not sure that forming a new county would help us. The smaller the county the more fragile it becomes. Roy Heider said that it would make more sense to join Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity. Just imagine the law enforcement issues as our own county. One small murder trial, road disaster, or any other disaster, could break us.
I feel that it is more important than ever to get Southern Humboldt out of the control of Fortuna, but I don’t see any indication that SoHum is will to fight for that. If we just want to roll over and let Fortuna take over, just take your eye off the ball, and it WILL stay that way.
I feel that it’s important that when I say these things, that I say that I have no hard feelings for the good people of Fortuna, I have many friends there. But they don’t really understand SoHum good enough to be telling us how to live our lives. Does anybody think that Fortuna understands us?
By the way, I’m also cancelling my subscription. I really do feel that The T-S does what it has to do to survive. They know the risk that they are taking, they know that they will lose most of us, but we are expendables.
For what it’s worth, I have the “Redhead Blackbelt” on automatic log-in when she makes a post. She has the best source of news in SoHum.
The “Redheaded Blackbelt” has become my main source for local news and information as well. I appreciate the civil conversations.
Good point Charlotte. “If they don’t support, us why should we support them”.
Thank you.

Huh? People who choose to live away from major population centers, off in the beautiful countryside, should be happy when businesses cater to them, and not lament when a business realizes it’s operating at a loss to serve remote customers.
You can’t blame the Times-Standard for these decisions. Honestly. When you say the Times-Standard, you refer to the people who work at the building on 6th Street in Eureka. When actually these decisions are made at the corporate level. Please remember the Times-Standard is owned by a huge media corporation that is way under water financially. MediaNews Group owes Bank of America zillions and now you have BofA execs sitting on MNG’s board. They have to squeezed as much profit as possible from every one of their newspapers.
That is why you have these decisions that make no sense from the perspective that the Times-Standard exists to serve it’s community. It’s primary function right now is to service its parent company’s corporate debt. But please don’t blame the people who staff the newsroom, advertising and business offices on 6th Street in Eureka. They don’t like these decisions anymore than you do. They want to provide the best news product possible to the community, but they don’t own the company. They have to do what the people who sign their paychecks tell them to do.
I don’t think many people blame the local folk and I don’t even blame the corporation. I just know how this is going to affect locals. I also know that folk here rightfully feel they don’t owe a corporation any loyalty either.

Good point. I won’t be subscribing, however.

The TS is politically biased and soooo far left that many won’t miss it. Readers these days demand fair and balanced reporting and the folks on 6rh Street haven’t provided it.

I don’t agree, G.I.B. All my lefty friends think the TS is soooo far right. Which puts the T-S in the middle, where it should be.

Well, we live in a world economy now… The fat cats have sent our jobs to China, they own our politicians, and the media. I can absolutely double-dog guarantee that the bubble headed bleach blondes on T.V, telling us what to think, will be there until America is sucked dry. Wanna bet?
Do you like being told that we live in a word economy yet? It wouldn’t be so hard to take if China had any environmental standards. Or, any workers rights. The Three Gorges Dam, that they just built for cheap power, is the equivalent of building a dam across the Golden Gate and flooding the Sacramento valley. Can you imagine that in America? Yet, that’s what we are competing with, while we are being chided for complaining. Get real! Doing without a newspaper is that least of our economic problems.
Why don’t we send some of our “environmentalists” to China?
We seem to have no problem sending our raw logs to China. Our mills have shut down and been parted out, Eel River Sawmill for an example. We are a one world economy now for the most part these days. Chinese labor is CHEAP! When do we start building up our own manufacturing capacity in this country again. Logging will continue, whether we ship our logs to China or mill them locally. Maybe our environmentalist should go to China to improve their life, like the environmentalists have improved all of our lives?

“The”, not “that”. Dang typos…
Dear kym thanks for your news blog. My 84 year old mother lives in redwood valley. Mom calls me everyday to have me read your blog to her so she can get the latest updates. She says you know news a day before the ukiah paper reports it. Mom said to tell you thanks!

Fiance here: I have been checking into the online subscriptions for the T-S. You can pay $5.99 a month or $59 a year through another agent or you can pay $39 a year to the T-S for their online version. You don’t get the whole paper for the $59 a year service. Of course I agree that Kym is one of the best news sources for SoHum and hers is free………
