When I was a kid growing up in the river, we called them “water Snakes” I didn’t know what a garter snake was until the newcomers showed up and educated us.

I agree with your caption. It would probably love it if you’d place a fat cricket near its nose!

Garter snakes are fun. You can pick them up and, if you’re careful, they won’t bite you.

We had a large king snake on our path this morning… only the second I have seen here near the river. The striped garter snakes are good swimmers.

They eat fish and are quite adept at catching them. Ever now and then we wold find a dead or dying snake that had eaten a sticklel-back fish.
