Former Willits Man Among the 31 Killed in Afghanistan Helicopter Crash

A former Willits man, Jesse Pittman, was killed aboard the U.S. Chinook helicopter that was shot down early Saturday morning over Afghanistan. The incident which killed 7 Afghans and 31 US  troops was the greatest single loss of US soldiers during the Afghan war. Pittman formerly served as a firefighter in Mendocino.

A sad story made more sad and personal by the loss of a local man.

UPDATE:The Press Democrat tells a moving story of Jesse Pittman’s determination to become a SEAL.

  • Does god bless this war, is he on a side, do we even acknowledge the children we kill there, Why did this brave soldier and his family have to bear this loss? What is it we want them to do there?

  • Tom, your questions are valid, I just always feel sympathetic to the families at this time and it always seems insensitive to “go there” under a memorial of a families son. Start a new thread or something, but show respect at this time as a grieving family and loved ones may read this. Of course, this blog allows much freedom of expression as long as kindness and respect are used.

  • Although it’s difficult today to see beyond the sorrow,
May looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow.
