Stabbing at Garberville's Controversial Vets' Park
Recent cleanup of the Vet’s Park
Garberville’s Veterans’ Park which has been the vortex of recent controversy centered around its use by transients was the scene of a stabbing this week.
According to a Humboldt Co. Sheriff press release:
On 07-05-2011, approximately 7:00 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a stabbing victim at Jerold Phelps Hospital, in Garberville. A deputy responded to the hospital and met with the 34-year-old male victim. The victim told the deputy he was at Veterans Park in Garberville when the male suspect he knew as “Bud” approached him. “Bud” asked him for money or beer. The victim refused to give him either one. “Bud” got angry, shoved the victim to the ground, and attempted to slash the victim’s throat with a box cutter. The victim covered his throat with his hands to protect himself. Several witnesses in the area came to the victim’s rescue and pulled “Bud” off the victim.
The victim received cuts to his hands and wrists, and was treated for those injuries at the hospital. Anyone with information about the suspect is requested to call the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Garber Station 707- 923-2761 or the Humboldt County Sheriffs Main station at 707-445-7251.
The suspect, known as “ Bud “ is described as a white male adult, mid 20’s, tall and slender build and always wears a Cowboy Hat or Baseball cap. He is a transient.

SO MUCH FOR POLICE WORK. Put a toilet there and ola a deputy. This points out our need for real law enforcement, for mental health treatment, for I can’t even list them all. It does not point out anything about the character of homeless people
It’s a Vets’ Park.

Fixed!
Fiance here: The punctuation police have arrived!
At least they weren’t fighting over that danged ole’ controversial port-a-potty, now that would have been news!
Okay Kids, it’s time to learn how to properly punctuate your ole.
And, in addition, here are some rules for ‘an’ and ‘a’:
You can dig a hole, (not to be confused with a**hole although it’s close)
or, if you’re in a hurry, and you need to apostrophize –you can dig an ‘ole.
I mean what else you gonna do when there’s no portapotability?
Fiance:
Suzy dear, while you post was too funny, I was not trying to say ‘ole, as in hole, I was saying ole’ as in old. Carry on!
ole’ as in old
Oh! OK I see, but where’d the ‘e’ come from? Not that Suzy cares. But big brother, with his big Eye, is watching us. And I just didn’t want you to get a punctuation ticket, or have someone take out their compensation issues on you, or something.
Suzy’s back! Back in black. Fabulously stunning and in fine form again. :).
It is so difficult to describe the daily activity there in the “Vets park”, this is but one incident the community is now aware of and only because of the blood that was shed. Pretty scary hu ?? I work across the street and am confronted on a daily basis with less than kind words coming from that direction. At what point do the people who live and work here get to sit in the “Vets Park” ? Where is the mutual respect that should be shared between ones that live in a town and ones that pass thru it ?
I think it’s time to point out that Jim DeMulling (hope I spelled it right) was a Wobbly, a member of the IWW, Industrial Workers of the World. I knew Jim. You don’t name a park (it’s not “The Vets'” Park) after a Wobbly and then kick out the homeless. They represented the homeless, the disenfranchised.
Now, it is not in the Constitution, but I maintain it is the right of every human being to be able to go use a toilet or relieve themselves in some sanitary way. Period end of discussion. In Europe, most towns have public restrooms. In the USA there isn’t a toilet to use in many places where you pay money and would expect there to be a toilet, including some gas stations.
Point is, we all have a problem in finding a place to “go” in Garberville/Redway. And the ones without homes have it worse. Give someone a place to shower and use the toilet and they stand a better chance of gaining employment. It is the right and moral thing to do. As for the problem people, they will be there with or without a toilet.
But in our land, it is illegal to sleep or take a dump unless you have the keys to the kingdom. That is wrong. How we solve this is up to us. But a public toilet should be on every other corner, not just in Jim DeMulling Park.
I’m not sure about every other corner but at least one in Garberville seems reasonable to me.
Thanks for pointing out Jim Demulling’s (you spelled it right but no capital, I believe) role in the park. I didn’t know him but he sounds like a wonderful man.
As for the Vet`s Park in Garberville, They should install a metal detector and a full body scan like in the airports. That would solve the violence. Also install a porta-potty and charge a $ one dollar fee for every use, as a fund to repair the porta-potty after the homeless break it up.

First have a high level person from the Sheriff’s Office at this meeting or cancel it. Then ask the Sheriff’s employee or the Sheriff himself what they can do for some basic cleanup actions, starting with arrests for drunk/drugged in public, outstanding warrants, daily contacts and checks for crimes being comitted in public with transient-homeless people in public places, ask business owners what private property property they want to enforce trespass laws on and have the Sheriff take action. Tell the people who can take action legally, not those that can’t, to help solve a problem and suddenly the chronic-transient-homeless element will be greatly reduced as the word gets out. Include mental health from the county and ask them to provide what assistance they can. If the problem is to be addressed it needs the agencies that can take action.
