He Made His Bed, Now…

He made his bed and now he gets to lie in it.

My eighteen year old son, Quinn, handcrafted this bed. He began with cutting down the trees, cured the wood, crafted each post himself and then assembled this piece. Now it stands on the dirt floor of a round cabin his grandfather built.

I just thought I’d casually mention that my EIGHTEEN year old son builds his own furniture–from scratch.  Not that I’m bragging.  Just thought I’d casually drop this into the blog in case anyone was interested… .  Okay, I’m bragging but…honestly, isn’t that just so cool?  Did I mention I have the greatest sons in the world?  I did tell you my son who is only eighteen years old handcrafted his own bed, didn’t I?

Sorry, but if I were wearing buttons, they’d be spronging across China right now.

  • As a grandma, do I have bragging rights, too?

  • I’ll bet his grand-dad is pretty proud, too. A lot of custom, specialized sawmilling work went into that round house! I still haven’t ever been inside of it.

  • THAT is totally cool!

an admirable determination and spirit and quality workmanship.

  • “There is some of the same fitness in a man’s building his own house that there is in a bird’s building its own nest. Who knows but if men constructed their dwellings with their own hands, and provided food for themselves and families simply and honestly enough, the poetic faculty would be universally developed, as birds universally sing when they are so engaged? But alas! we do like cowbirds and cuckoos, which lay their eggs in nests which other birds have built, and cheer no traveller with their chattering and unmusical notes. Shall we forever resign the pleasure of construction to the carpenter?”
    — Henry David Thoreau (Walden, or Life in the Woods)

You can be very, very proud Kym. I hope that he sticks with building things, It has been one of my greatest passions in life.

  • looks like its time for mom and gram to throw together a comfortable bed set to finish it off 🙂 it looks like he had some great mothering,,,,among other things

  • So will he be sleeping on that bed in the round house from now on, or…?

  • Have to ask about the round house floor, did you say its a dirt floor? So is it pounded or treated with oils or what? It looks so smooth. Very cool space.

  • That Incense Cedar around you is great for this kind of work. Salmon Creek is the local spot for Cedar… It likes serpentine soil… A beautiful bed, indeed.

  • I am so happy to see it finished. It was really nice to see it in the process of being built and great to see it finished. The wood smelled wonderful! Thanks for sharing.
