Briceland Road Opening Tonight

Kim Sallaway has taken more photos of the county’s workers finishing the Briceland Road. He expects them to open the road by 8:30.  He says workers were packing up and calling their wives.  Sallaway was impressed by the efforts of the road workers.  “They need to put a statue up to these guys. …They worked a lot of hours.”   He also passed on his admiration for several members of the community who stepped up to help.  He said that a member of the Wilcox family went out yesterday and filled potholes on Old Briceland Road.  He also is appreciative of the new Facebook page SoHum Awareness that is trying to get information out there. Everybody who “likes” the page gets updates on their Facebook news page.  Twitter updates can be texted straight to your phone if you sign up for it (all free.) This is being updated by Bobbi Wisby, Estelle Fennell, and by me.

And I want to thank Kim for his long walks through the rain to take these  incredible photos.  (Go see his lovely photos here.)

Great, it even looks like it will stay better than logs. Modern technology and outstanding road workers!

I know this is naive, but if the bridge is rock, where is the water going?

Norah, It isn’t really a bridge. The water is flowing beside the road really. Because of various reasons it was undercutting it. The county workers dumped some boulders etc. into the hole that the river and slide had caused. Now the boulders are holding up a lot of fill and the road. Just like the redwood crib did for many many years.

Very impressive! From the looks of these photos, the crew did an outstanding job.
Does anyone know how old that log crib was?

That’s the question I have…. were they the original logs from the 1920’s when the road was created or a repair from one of the megafloods of the 50′-60’s?

I’m impressed witth this project having kept up with the good reporting and nice pictures here. Thanks, Kym and Kim. A lot of huge work was done in a short amount of time, it seems, and folks are pretty pleased. But… fill me in– was this the County road crews? I think so. If so, nice work.

Do you want to let your County Supervisor (Clif or Jimmy) know you’re happy with the speedy efforts as well as with their road crews? If you do, call him/them, or leave a message here with the County Deputy Clerk, Kathy Hayes: # 707 476-2396 . Good folks and efforts should be appreciated.

Get some rest. Tomorrow’s a big day and starting early.

Nice idea, Skippy. The county workers did a great job. The Public Works number is 445-7491 which handles the County roads.

Sometime you’ll have to come see the world’s tallest trees, the redwoods.

Those can’t be redwoods, they logged all of them.

If there are no redwoods left, how can someone cut redwood roots in the Richardson Grove realignment project beginning this summer? Seriously though, great job at rip rapping and getting the road open. Way to go to all involved in making this road drivable again.

The workers I talked to were Parks people on overtime, not county, since they’re responsible for road maintenance through state parks (poor people, the soggiest, soakingest, pot-holiest sections are all theirs). The guys did a fantastic job for us while being as careful as a good doctor never to promise too much, too fast. It boggles my mind how many truckloads of rock that hole ate up. Let’s hope it’s well fed for decades to come!

I believe LW is correct. The workers were State Park guys, not HC guys. The locals got the big trees off the road, but the State guys did the rest. All of them are heros in my book.
Thank you very much!

The only thing that I know for sure is that the local county road crew cleared the trees off the road and opened it to one-way traffic before it closed completely. Also, the county road crew is keeping the worst of the Charles holes filled because the state parks doesn’t have the resources. I talked to the horses mouth. They are my forever heroes.

The guys that fixed the road are also my forever heroes.

The only people that are not my forever heroes are the greedy bastards running our country, and selling our soul off-shore.
