Unplug for 15 on the 15th Say Anti-Nuke Plant Activists

Find the thought that the government is planning on providing $8 billion in federal loan guarantees for building new nuclear plants …er..taxing? Then……unplug for fifteen–for fifteen minutes on tax day (April 15th) at 6pm Pacific Time.  Just the simple act of shutting down your electricity for 15 minutes on one day will bring attention to the No Nuke movement says Hollywood screenwriter and former Humboldt woman, Max Adams.

As news from Japan runs the gamut from workers risking their lives to stop a meltdown that will destroy a large section of that small country, to infants being unable to drink tapwater, to the psychological effects on people when they no longer trust their government, then there is an increasing desire here at home for aging nuclear facilities to be decommissioned and for there to be a hiatus on starting new ones.

Adams and her supporters are hoping that this movement will send a message that gives those activists a further tool that they can use to stop the spread of Nuclear plants and to prevent what is happening now in Japan from happening elsewhere.

“a safe, clean, emission-free source of power”
“a safe, clean, emission-free source of power”
“a safe, clean, emission-free source of power”

Every time I hear about a new crisis at the plant, higher levels of radioactivity being detected in the air, water, and soil, new risk to the workers and the public, the smug, self-satisfied words of that PR flack from the Edison Electric Institute come to mind. I have to wonder, is anybody really going to keep buying that line of bullcrap after what we’re seeing unfold in Japan?

Removing this peril will take more than a fifteen-minute commitment. How about cutting our personal energy consumption by 15%– for good? Or, since this gesture is planned for tax day, how about a nation-wide refusal to pay taxes (at least until the people get to allocate funds themselves)?
