"At the Precipice of a Massive Nuclear Crisis"

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZKKP44b7ao&w=680&h=430]

UPDATE 11:39: Here is a excellent video that explains what has happened so far.  Very nice graphics of the core and pictures of what happened after the explosion.  Mention of 90 people being tested for radiation poisoning so far, etc.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q6C8US20jI&feature=player_embedded]

Also here is an excellent link to a twitter feed about the situation that Greenpeace is providing.

Al Jazeera is reporting that the situation at the Fukushima nuclear power plant could be very serious.

Peter Hayes, the executive director of the Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainable development in Melbourne, described the situation as “dire”.

“It’s still possible that the reactor workers can stabilise the situation if power is brought back, if coolant is brought into the reactor,” he told Al Jazeera, but warned that “we’re really right at the precipice of a massive nuclear crisis”….

Radiation 1,000 times above normal was detected in the control room of one plant in the early hours of the morning.

The quake, which measured 8.9 on the Richter scale, cut the supply of off-site power to the plant and diesel generators intended to provide back-up electricity to the cooling system.

“The events that occurred at these plants, which is the loss of both offsite power and onsite power, is one of the rarest events to happen in a nuclear power plant, and all indications are that the Japanese do not have the situation under control,” said Edwin Lyman, a nuclear expert at the Union of Concerned Scientists, a US-based nonprofit organisation.

Here is a wonderful point by point recap by the World Nuclear News that takes you through what happened and explains each step.*

Also BBC News is doing a credible job of following the story and often reverts to show video of the massive explosion that rocked the plant several hours ago.

I want to stress this may all be contained but in case there is any fallout this is a graphic depiction of how fast it would get here. (UPDATE THIS GRAPHIC HAS BEEN DISCREDITED)

Grass roots prep would be a whole lot better than the county taking over.

And Ernie, we did have SOD, and Iodine, I may still have a small vile of the iodine, but the SOD is ancient. And I am old enough to not want to survive a full on radiation attack.

Does Sheriff Downey’s state of emergency cover a nuclear cloud? Also, how many rads does it take to hurt somebody?

problem is we need to know amount and time we are exposed to figure things out. Also weather patterns at the time. We also need to know how this will affect the food chain. It will be impossible to decon everything.

Wow and Holy Cow, Sweet Jesus, too. Kym, you’re carrying the best information and recent updates of all our websites, thank you.

Pass the iodine and geiger counters, Ernie, you were terribly uncanny on Fred’s blog several days ago, 12 hours before Japan’s earthquake, when you noted, “I’m scared! With all this global warming a moon coming too close might cause a flooding tide. (wink)

How’d you do that, Ernie?

Keep up the good work, Kym.

Well my SOD is out of date.. and if all 3 plants do go .. well we’re screwed.
And to think just a year or so ago Russel really want to buy a geiger counter.
Part of me wants to know how much and when, and what if anything can be done, the other parts just wants to bury my head and cry..

It seems that this map is all over the internet but has not been legitimately sourced. It seems to be a photoshop job to me, perhaps an altered tsunami hazard map of some sort? The logo in the lower left corner of the map is from Australian Radiation Services. But if you look at their website, there is absolutely no sign of that map or even a mention of the situation in Japan. The company seems to deal mostly with minimizing medical radiation exposure.

Also, the radiation levels are incredibly high, perhaps absurdly so. If we were really to get 750 rads, that would pretty much guarantee upwards of 90% mortality rates….

I’m not saying that we won’t get any radiation if there is a meltdown. But I think it would definitely be less than is shown on that map…..

I think the map was someone’s not-at-all-funny version of a joke or an internet hoax….. just my two cents….

Our exposure would also be determined by the altitude of the radiation cloud.

After Iodine, another proactive diet tip is adding miso to your daily diet for help with possible radiation exposure of the
TSA or Japanese variety.

This particular map does seem sketchy, there are at least two different versions of it circulating around. Here’s a site that claims it’s a fake:

http://theorstrahyun.blogspot.com/2011/03/millions-of-americans-will-not-be.html

and here:

http://focusonenergy.wordpress.com/2011/03/12/radiation-map-fail/ so you can make up your own mind on it.

However there is obviously a jet stream flow from Japan to North America you can see it here:

http://www.stormsurfing.com/cgi/display_alt.cgi?a=npac_250

the question is if a large amount of radiation is released in Japan will it reach the US and Canada in a strength to be threatening to humans and agriculture. That is a known unknown to quote Rumsfeld.

It is something to worry about but let’s not panic. This map is scary but remember North Americans survived whatever floated our way from two gigantic explosions in 1945.

have a peaceful day,
Bill
