Mateel Presents 20th Annual Humboldt Hemp Fest This Weekend

This weekend, November 12 through 14, the Mateel Community Center in Redway will present the 20th annual Humboldt Hemp Fest.  A beloved a local tradition to honor one of Mother Nature’s wonders, this special 3-day celebration (a Hemp Fest first) is dedicated to the memory of pot guru, Jack Herer, as well as the festival’s founding mothers, the Hemp Awareness Group.

Comedy Kick Off
The fun begins on Friday, November 12th with the hilarious theatrical comedy, The Marijuana-Logues.   Featuring renowned comedians, Tony Camin, Rob Cantrell, and Dan Gabriel, The Marijuana-Logues played Off-Broadway throughout 2004/05 and has since been touring nationally to great audience acclaim. The show sets herb center stage, delving into fact and fiction, myths and misnomers alike.   And, as a special treat, this comedy kick-off event will also feature a stand up set by the evening’s host, Ngaio Bealum, a side-splitting Sacramento based comic known for his pot comedy and activism.  Doors open at 8pm with show at 8:30.  Admission is $20 at the door.

Main Event
The main event will take place on Saturday, November 13th and will feature a full day of music, speakers, dance, comedy, film, and vendors.   Highlighting performances by Lukas Nelson  & Promise Of The Real, John Trudell & Tribalvoice, Chief Greenbud, Ambush, To Life!, Crossroads, Selby Minner, Ngaio Bealum, Sahra Indio, Naomi Louise Warne, Rockin Rubies, Onyx Moon, and the Mashakai/ Round Valley Dancers, this all-day extravaganza will also feature a tribute to Jack Herer and lots more.   Check out the Hemp Fest page at  HYPERLINK “http://www.mateel.orgwww.mateel.org for the full entertainment schedule.  Other featured activities will include a medical marijuana photo contest and a thickest stalk competition, so bring your best shot and/or a cross-section of your biggest stalk for a chance to win great prizes.  Doors open at 11am with a suggested donation of $20 encouraged at the door.

Forum
On Sunday, November 14th, the weekend’s festivities will culminate with a free hemp fest forum.  Open from 2pm to 6pm, this event will offer a panel discussion with a wide variety of expert speakers moderated by kmud’s Cynthia Elkins. Speakers including John Trudell (artist/ activist), Elvy Musikka (federal recipient of medical cannabis), Omar Figueroa (attorney), Chris Van Hook (attorney/ Clean Green certification specialist), Julia Carrera (acupuncturist/ Mendocino compliance certifier),  Mark Lovelace (Humboldt County Supervisor), Tony Turner (Humboldt Co-Op), Robert Sutherland ( activist), Haylee Corliss (Hummap), Max Del Real and Joey Burger (Humboldt Growers Association), and more.  The event will also offer a community Q&A and a break out session where the public will have an opportunity to engage directly with the experts about what’s next for hemp/ marijuana reform in Humboldt/Mendocino, California, and beyond.
