Git Rid of Spider Mites

A knowledgeable local sent me the following  recipe for getting rid of some of pot’s most prevalent pests. Remember mites can overwinter in outdoor gardens in berries and mints so get rid of those plants or at least spray them if you are having a problem there.

Spider mites can be a real problem in many places and have been shown to adapt to many pesticides. However the mites can be killed very effectively using alcohol sprayed at up to a 50% solution .I use isopropyl alcohol from Costco($4/half gal) . I mix it with an equal part water (making a 35% solution ) mix in my neem and Maxi crop as usual and spray when the sun is off the plants. You can use vodka right off the shelf (40%) if you use it on food crops. Some kinds of plants do not like this mix so try it on one leaf first. I have used it on eggplants , beans, mints, berries and other plants with good results. As usual spray a few days later to get late hatching eggs. This spray will kill lots of other kinds of bugs and will even keep down the powdery mildew . I use the alcohol alone on plant that are almost ready to harvest to good effect .In fact alcohol can be used full strength if just dabbed on th leaf. So please share this information with others ….throw away the pesticides and GROW ORGANICALLY!

This gets more fascinating as time goes on. I’m hoping this remedy will work on my legal herbs and other garden plants. It’s odd to think of alcohol as organic but getting my plants soused t can’t be any worse than the tobacco juice cure Jerry Baker recommended.

I’d save the vodka for the person having to do all the hand work of pruning and spraying.

Is Isopropynol considered organic?

Isopropoyl is definitely NOT organic. But vodka is. 😉

Tobacco juice WILL contain Mosaic Virus- wanna trash your neighbor’s tomato garden? just toss in a couple cigarette butts and PRESTO! they will search the internet for why their plants are so fucked up. Do not use tobacco products if you ever want to garden in any manner that is productive.
Spider mites are now resistant to Floramite, as too many ass-clowns in toyota trucks w/ 707 stickers and pit bulls have no clue as to IPM- and have over applied this product to where it is no longer effective along the coast. For all you over ferters who over water their garbage they claim to be weed, might as well drop the FORBID- even though it doesn’t have a crop label, most you don’t read and follow labels anyhow so it doesn’t matter.
You clowns who spray should look into fan nozzles on all spray booms, going high pressure with low flow- don’t be a lazy pot toker and spray UNDER the leaves, this is where the eggs will be along with the adults, pupa, and larva- all 4 stages of insect life cycle.
Silicone added to your fertigation mix will grow harder leaf surface which is harder for insects to feed on or mold to puncture the leaf.
If I were a pot grower who couldn’t grow pot without going online to beg for a CURE-ALL, I think I would sell my pit bull, scrap my silly toyota truck, and turn that stupid ball cap around so I didn’t look like a dumb-ass and then I would get a job or join the army and go fight a war for the federal reserve, come home to be a cop, and then rip off travelers along the road, or review their tax returns and demand a bribe. Too many of you think weed is salvation, and it never has been- too many of you just waste soil and water, and mix your fert in the bottom of your shallow so-hum well like the clowns you are.
One thing I will say is a dep of Mr.Nice at 4500 feet got rock hard with no insects except the odd grasshopper- growing high up is the only way to do it right- and next year I will have Ny Diesel crossed with Trinity Purple Kush that will grow without any of the issues ya’ll have.
Start by learning to tie your shoes before you try to make millions off weed sales, stop chopping down trees to give your trash weed full sun, and stop burying your trash in holes and maybe your karma won’t have you growing trash weed.
Good Luck & understand why deer on the coast will eat your plants, but mountain deer won’t- it’s because even deer hate neo-hippies!

Growing up, we sprayed rubbing alcohol mixed with equal parts water on our vegetable garden as a cure for powdery mildew as well as for mites and bugs. The first time I suggested this home remedy to a gardener up here, she looked at me like I had lost my dang mind. Until she tried it. Although admittedly not a cure-all, it is a pretty benign solution, which is always a plus in my book. I loved seeing this advice on your blog, Kym!

Hi Kym,
I wanted to follow-up on this post because I had occasion to try the alcohol as a treatment for mites. I used it at 33% on day one and sprayed thoroughly on all leaf surfaces. On day two I looked under the loop for mites and there were active adults and juveniles as well a a large number of eggs. Sprayed again (this time slightly stronger, say 40%) on day four exactly 96 hours later. Day five and six I am still seeing the critters, my feeling is that the numbers are reduced, but there are still many eggs. Can’t say that I would use this method or recommend it.

Can someone please answer me this question!? :

After a plant has been sprayed with isopropyl as a treatment for say ‘spider mites’ – is the bud harvested from that plant safe to smoke, and/or consume, or will the isopropyl have contaminated the bud!?

Cheers in advance!

The isopropyl evaporates so your bud is fine to smoke
