The Potfarmer Wife

Yesterday’s video about Pot wives sparked a discussion on my Facebook page with one friend dismissing the women in the video as “Potstitutes.”* I have to admit that though I have heard of women like those in the video, the women I know are much more like the ones described by another friend, Autumn Hargrave.  I’ve (with her permission) reprinted what she said below.

The Potfarmer wife is a noble creature. We are as strong as the Redwoods we grow in and as cleverly frightful as the owls who occupy their branches. Our lives are full of all things magic and tragic.

For most of us the concerns are all the …same. We focus on raising the kids and taking care of home and hearth. Most of us do this everyday with the knowledge of an undercurrent which runs under our roots every second of every hour. This undercurrent fuels our momentum. Our momentums’ are never less than balls out from sun up to sun down and then some. On any given day we are raising wild ass country kids, growing the goodness, running pounds and managing the hustle and flow that is the So Hum way of life. Not to mention keeping our selves in shape and our men happy.

How many women do you know who can load up kids, dogs and valubles in a blink of eye then breathe a sigh of relief over prepared fear being spent? Then simply begin again? We are not the average soccer moms or something as simple as a grown up potstitute. The Potfarmer wife steps out of the greenhouse into her skirt and heels as easily as city women go from Nike’s to pumps. Our days are just as long. Our dirty feet and toned arms are a small testament about our lives. Our stretch marks and sandal lines are our tiger stripes.

We are the wives of the last American Potfarmers. We are the backbone of all things sane in this chaotic world we have all grown around us.

Potfarmer wives are the girl next door with more body hair and a pot leaf stuck to her sweater. She grows Trainwreck and turnips, clips pot and weedwacks grass, feeds kids and grows a plant to donate to the fire department.  She might or might not dig the holes but she walks the waterline, decides when to pollinate for next year’s seeds, feeds the clipping crew and manicures more than her share.  She probably finds out when dropping the kids off for school that a buyer is in the neighborhood and rushes home to weigh up that last pound and drop it off at the neighbors.  She can sew and can and clip and probably kill a rattlesnake.

These women are outlaws and pioneers.  Good people growing an illegal weed.

*Note that the urban dictionary I linked to does not have exactly the same flavor as our local version.  Our version of potstitute is a woman who will be with a wealthy grower in order to get her hands on some of the money.    I don’t much care for this term.  I think it is slung way too freely at any pretty girl hanging with a hill guy or indoor cowboy but, nonetheless, I once met a woman who I thought fit that description.

These women occupy a very unique position in the culture of the American west. There’s simply nothing to which they compare. They’re not farmer’s wives, they’re not gold-diggers, and they’re not gangsta molls. They’re complete originals. Loving the posts, Kym!

I don’t know how I missed this one. Not gold diggers? Give me a break, they do what they do for money. Not to make a social statement, not for the betterment of mankind or anyone but themselves. They risk losing their children and their lives for the all-mighty dollar. They will suck the marijuana cultivation thing dry then move on. They don’t grow for medicinal purposes, that is nothing but a ruse…they grow for profit and will do what ever they can to destroy anything and anyone that gets in their way…no matter what the effect on their children and other people around them. They hide behind facades of their “goddess” syndrome. They pretend to care about the environment while they destroy it cultivating that weed that they all worship above any and everything else. They worship it like a god because of the cash it puts into their pockets. The more I think about it the more I realize how wrong I was to ever consider them anything but the money grubbing gold diggers that they are. They can’t make it in regular society so they joined the outlaw society of MendoBoldt. Sooner or later they destroy everything they touch. I can’t wait until Feburary of 2012……our kid will be 18 and her or her mother will never get another dime out of us beyond that point, that is if the feds don’t get them first.

These “pot farmer” wives are some of the greediest and most selfish women that have ever walked this planet. The denziens of Rodeo Drive and 5th Avenue don’t have a clue compared to the evil that permiates the Hills of Humboldt County and the black hearts that dwell within’ that outlaw culture.

Ouch! Take it easy Fiance, don’t be so honest. Around these parts one learns how to lie and deceive early, let me tell you. I admit that you do make a pertinent point but sheeesh girl, doncha know that dwelling on the truth might upset some of the good folks that live here. You didn’t need to mention gold. Or black hearts. Can’t we sweeten the colors of this thread back to promoting the illusion of what you call the “goddess syndrome”, ie can’t we continue with the rainbow colors of the tyedye facade behind which the middle class values of the materialistic outlaws pretend to be bestowing goodness and wisdom with their sweet smiles upon the less enlightened. Remember, before you judge others try to walk a mile in their shoes. You’d smile too if you had a jar full of hundreds to go dig up this morning so you and your man can make another run to Hawaii before harvest.

Joe, that sounds a lot like the old worn out theme of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment. Interesting, I suppose. But dig, sometimes things in life reverse. Sometimes something which was once victimized later becomes the killa and vice verse. So if one smokes a little killa one becomes … are you following me? Let me put it this way, not that many years ago it was an admirable thing when one was alert, focused, and astute, whereas in the present, being vacuous, incoherent and absent minded is the new role model

“Sometimes the things in life reverse.” True enough. But I ask why? Because no one tries walking in the other person’s shoes? No empathy anywhere?

Because right here on God’s good earth, right here amongst us, you will occasionally be able to find a savior. Then everything is different. Someone like Jesus appears, someone with a special aura, halo, hairdo, or whatever, can turn your life around on a dime. The old song and dance of life which once could be described as a bad romance suddenly takes on a totally new meaning.

Suzy, I so love you. Oooops…sorry about the honesty. I can’t help myself, thats just the way I am and I tend to call em’ like I see em’. I am not well liked for that, especially not in Humboldt, but I really don’t care. The lying is the thing that we hate most, a childs mother making the child lie about things we already know the truths to. Unecessary lies about things unecessary things…..like Spanish lessons. Did they think we really weren’t going to notice that the kid couldn’t speak a word of Spanish after five years of lessons? Not even Hola’ or Que Pasa.

Does anyone really think that “good people” protect bad ones. Apparently in Humboldt they do. Good people do not protect bads ones that neglect and abuse their children. People have told me they know how bad the ex really treats the child but still they protect the ex above the child. They think its better for them to care for the child than her own father. Somehow they are more qualified to raise his daughter than he is. They grow dope in Humboldt so, its all good. They’ll make sure she does well in school, whether she does or not….whats the big deal……changing one letter on a report card to another. I mean there are only a couple of letters between an A and an F anyway. So what if they forget to write down a few absences. It’s all good….lay back, here, smoke some of this and it’ll all be ooooooo K. Yeah, we know she really didn’t go to school there…but it looks better if we say she did. She did show up once a month for a couple of years and she did really well then. Just more good people protecting bad. I know. Its not the kids fault her mother drops her off at our houses for weeks at a time…shhhhh…don’t tell…….we’ll take great care of her for you. We are much more qualified than you…her father, that will lay down and die for her without question.

I would love to meet some of those women. Unfortunately the only one’s I’ve met were the alcholics and evil lying bitches that moved there for ulterior motives. They are the wanna be pot farmer wives that you speak of. They are the ones that force their chldren to lie about their fathers because of their own emotional neediness, they cannot survive in normal society and because of the secrecy involved in the culture they get away with abusing their children and everything else they come in contact with. Plean introduce me to the women of whom you speak.

Anon, there is no easy answer to why a situation like this happens. As many parents who have been very involved with their children have experienced tragic choices that their children have made that don’t really match up to the up bringing. I’m not discrediting your sentiment for being involved , just trying to put in perspective from a parents view.
Humboldtkids, I do know many a good woman/parents that are very different from the experience that you write about. It’s unfortunate situation you have been through and it sounds like a healing needs to take place?

let’s try and work togeather and not pull apart during hard times…

I don’t think you have any idea what the “hard times” we are going through entail but I appreciate your sentiment. Its kind of hard to “pull together” with people that refuse to even speak to you to work out problems. Its hard to want to “pull together” with people that think its ok to deny a father his parental rights in order to protect a woman that make an illegal living. I sure hope her new husband is paying attention, pretty sure he’ll be dealing with these same issues in the years to come. They have more kids, she’ll get more support from him.

But, that being said, I wasn’t speaking of just her in that comment. I’ve met friends of the kids mothers and they are just as bad if not worse than her. Some of the emotional issues they have are mind boggling and yet your culture turns a blind eye. I have a problem with any parent that is willing to risk losing their children and in fact endangering their childrens lives because they want to grow for a living. I see the violence escalating every year. I see more “missing” persons reports up there every year.

Good mothers don’t drop their kids off at the neighbors for “weeks at a time” while they are off galavanting about the planet or “up the hill” working. I had thought that she was leaving her for a few days a week and considered that bad, recently I found it was for “weeks at a time.” That child should have been here with her father, not being passed around the neighborhood, living without either parent. Her mother was hiding her from us, lying about it all and there was nothing we could do that did not involve sending in the Feds. I wish we had!

I wish like hell I could send you some of the things writren by her and her friends about their lives and the emotional trauma they have endured because of your oh so wonderful culture. I know not all the kids up there suffer as these have……but the fact that some do and nothing is done about it makes me sick. I abhor the thought of one child suffering, especially if its because of their parents poor choices in life.

I do believe that it is hard to pull together with others that wont be part of the healing. So I think what I had more in mind was a healing that can take place for yourself as it may be a key for you and the future of your child when the time comes for you to be together. Talking to someone outside of the situation may be helpful and if you truly want to see it get better it will be hard work but worth it if you can find the peace and healing that is for you. The other people will have to work out their own peace, but each person must not look to the outside to get things worked out but take care of whats inside your own thoughts and feelings. It’s very freeing to get councling if you can consider that.

I count people good who reach outside of their own lives and try and help others. People who when a neighbor is in trouble, will sew quilts, hold fundraisers, clean houses, bring meals. Those are my neighbors. Those are the southern Humboldt folk I know. Good people growing something that should be legal.

Yeah, there good people that grow for a living then get on welfare that they don’t need. The key word you used is OUTLAW. They are outlaw’s that you glorify. They hide their children from their fathers then steal from the government that they don’t pay taxes to. What happens when pot is legal? What happens when the price drop down to $500 per pound? From what I hear poppies are the next big thing in Humboldt. Are y’all going to be screaming about how poppies are gods given plant? Will they all start growing poppies and producing opium and heroin? Lots of good illegal money there and techinically its just a plant that produces a good medicine. Once an outlaw always an outlaw. Few may go legit, but I’d say for the most part they will be looking for the easy money that comes from the illegality of what ever it is they are going to be doing next.

I ask you, who says? You?
These people are called “Islamic Terrorist” PERIOD. America is at war with “Islamic Terrorist.” The war on drugs is a war on all people that are “outlaws” “growing” illegal drugs or drug producing plants. You can’t have it both ways even though you try like hell!

This is the tragic lesson all Christians, good people, around the world are about to learn. Good people, bad people, Christians or Muslims, it is all irrelevant. The WAR is what it is whether either you or I like it or not.

Kym, you say:

Just like you can’t tar all Muslims with the same terrorist brush, neither can you say all growers are like one that you know.

Kym, Something for you to consider. The reality is that “there are NO civilians in war.” This is how this country and Israel justifies killing civilian people by the tens of thousands. The same rule applies to everyone that “grows” pot.

People that stand outside the law, the accepted norms of society, conflict with the self-righteousness of the law-abiding taxpayer. When “outlaws,” good, bad or otherwise think they are better than those of us that pay a price to be who and what we are, you’ve got a real problem.

I’ll be the first one to say, people have to live. How they decide to live is their choice. Like it or not, the Universe holds EVERYONE accountable for that choice.

Hating on pot growers is misdirected hostility…in the very least a wasted effort. Especially coming from anybody who smokes weed at all…or even sympathizes with the unecessary criminal element involved. If it’s about marijuana, and the enlightenment/medicinal aid it can bring to an individual, you’d think the more the merrier. Remember, marijuana is still illegal yet the demand for it is unrelenting. Think about how much sleazier it is to be a cellphone dealer, or insurance salesman, or real estate broker, or car dealer…telling calculated lies all day to rake in as much money with as little effort as possible. Even somebody flipping burgers at a fast food joint for minimum wage is “choosing” to assist a global criminal enterprise that openly targets adults and children alike. Are any of those professions “bad”? Where do you draw the line between individual and occupation? Try growing just a little bit of killa bomb dank yourselves, then consider the kind of physical and intelligent work required to keep a farm of it going.

Walking in another man or woman’s shoes is only guaranteed to get you sore feet. Just read the above comment (And?) if you don’t believe me. Personally, I’m not interested is sore feet.

OMG! I don’t like sore feet either. And just like And? said, some people sell cells, or cars, or flip burgers. I knew someone hadda job flipping burgers and he had really really sore feet all the time. He used to bitch about me not seeing things from his perspective. But I told him I don’t want to see thing through the perspective of sore feet. You see it wasn’t me who had the lousy job, right? I told him, don’t expect any sympathy or empathic soothing words from this corner. Then one night he came home and said he’d quit his job. I didn’t pay it much attention. But then he changed, he got introduced to a pot scene and started growing and everything was just fine, and I was happy to have the extra money around. Until he almost got busted, he hadda run away from his scene barefoot from the police and he totally trashed his newly healed feet. Can you imagine? No you probably don’t want to, but then his feet got better but his pot gig was ruined and so he gotta job selling used cars, his feet started getting sore again because he had to chase around the lot hustling prospects, he called them “Johns” LOL… and, but everyone drives a car so I guess somebody’s gotta do the walking, just like sex, if you know what I mean … but what about using another person’s cellphone, what will that get poor Suzy? A phonally transmitted disease?

This might sound nasty but cell phones grow all type of bacteria if you don’t clean them. Old-school pay phone handsets are hundreds of times less infected. Cells have cracks, nooks, and other bacteria vacation spots all over them. Plus people grab on them all the time. Sitting on the toilet checking twitter.

Pipes and shit are way cleaner. Folks will deny a pipe being like “I don’t want your cold” but then be like “can I use your cell” and get all types of rancid fecal bacteria on their hands and then “can I get some gum.” Cell phones are nasty.

Yep, just like I thought, pot causes all kinds of fatal diseases. I could ask you what a “bong” is, but I don’t think I really want to know. This conversations starting to ooze over the tops of my slippers. In parting, I do think Suzy is a hopeless case…
(Good for a laugh or two, though.)
