Grow it in the Sun

Love outdoor pot? Is it time to market it?  A group of both Humboldt and Bay Area residents thinks so.  They have created a new website dedicated to promoting outdoor marijuana over indoor.

One line from the site sticks with me— “market forces profiting from expensive indoor infrastructure advertise indoor’s peculiarities—most notably, uniformity and sterility—as if they’re virtues.” So true! Having tasted buckets of perfectly round, flawless factory farmed tomatoes, I know that “uniformity and sterility” are not virtues.  Those oddly shaped heirloom tomatoes found at the farmers’ market are more flavorful and practically bursting with vitamins. I suspect the same is true of outdoor buds compared to indoor buds.

The Grow it in the Sun website offers information about what the costs to the environment are when weed is grown indoors.

As urban areas begin to permit massive factories to cultivate tons of marijuana indoors, the massive energy and water use and subsequent air and water pollution are being overlooked in the new taxation green rush. The carbon footprint of indoor cultivation on the grid is one pound of CO2 gas per hour per 1000w light. How can anyone justify increased climate change to grow a weed indoors?

Their media links page points to some of the best articles about pot pollution out there (I’m not just saying it because they link to my blog–well, at least I hope not.) Two of my favorite are NPR’s The Environmental Cost of Growing Pot and The Environmental Costs of Pot (The later discusses outdoor as well as indoor pollution.)

This site isn’t nuanced.  This is an advocate site which has a position and pounds it in passionately. Since it’s a position I advocate, I like it. Check it out.  Below are their simplistic solutions to the problems of pot pollutions.  I know this isn’t the whole answer but it feels like a darn good start to me.

Solutions

The solution to the problems of pot pollution is simple: know your grower.

As a medical cannabis patient, you have the power to change things for the better. All you have to do is ask.

Ask for organic outdoor at your dispensary.

Ask your collective to cultivate sustainably.

Ask for information about the growers in your collective.

Where is your medicine coming from? Is it grown responsibly and organically in the sun? Is it factory-pharmed? Is it grown illegally in national forests or on outsized plantations?

If the budtender at your dispensary doesn’t know, ask them to find out. In the meantime, get your cannabis elsewhere.

Seek out collectives that will make you a partner in finding environmental solutions.

Join a collective that grows it in the sun.

Fooey on that graphic. This blog sponsers the most pollutive and uncaring industry on the planet….justified by end over means. Same with marijuana….I’ll gladly grow it outside if you give me a place to do it…I’d love to…gotta be somewhere nobody’s gonna mark and start burglarizing though.

Not everybody can grow outdoors. But, I support getting information out that will get people thinking about minimizing their environmental impact.

I didn’t buy organic food ten years ago. People speaking out about the dangers of corporate food make me rethink my buying habits and act more responsibly. I don’t think indoor growers are bad, Heck, I don’t even think corporate growers are bad. I just think if everyone made one or two small steps further towards environmentally sound practices than they are doing now, the world would be a lot safer for my kids. So I try to keep the conversation going. I try to bring up issues that are not being addressed. I try to offer that information to people. They don’t have to take it. But my hope is, over time, they will make more of an effort to use less energy, less fertilizer, less imported soil, and pump less water out of creeks already stressed by other factors.

…and who in their fricking mind is growing with FIVE THOUSAND 1,000 watt lights?!? You’re talking about a countable number of operations contributing a tiny fraction of indoor marijuana…of incomperable quality…grown with love in garage ops and the like. Preach your privileged outdoor without nailing your neighbor, fer cryin out loud. The pics of buds on this site are great, but when push comes to shove, mine are better.

Hey GMYL. How are you doing? You write your comment on Kym’s blog and you praise your pot shots as being superior to hers.
Where can I see your work?
I know Kym. She can deal with your insensitivity and ego, your comparisons and self agrandising, but I on the other hand, would like to see your photos.
Because, I do like a good bud picture, indoor or outdoor.
And I do like variety. I think most of us do.
Keep up the good work, Kym. We appreciate your drive, and your desire to share your opinions and your family’s life on your forum.

Pots, yes…shots, no. My photography skills are severely lacking…I wouldn’t win any kind of beauty contest against kym, that’s for sure.

…my point is “shadaap and grow it!”…parenthetical: good weed comes from good growers.

Apparently you don’t know what’s being discussed here, the 5000-light AgraMed grow proposed for Oakland. This site seems to be pitched to the Bay Area where crazy-big indoor scenes are in the works for Oakland, Berkeley and probably elsewhere, with criticism of their environmental effects just gearing up. I don’t see anything on the site slagging a light in a garage, but good arguments against making our beloved herbal botanical into a factory-processed pharmaceutical. Manufactured by monopolies.

The graphic above was advertised long before the proposed manufacturing facility was on the table. I think you know what I’m talking about. Yes, the jumbo-jet hangar indoor operations are the pits…also in that they would be generating concentrated profits that could be distributed in lesser but more equal parts among eco-friendly alternatives…i.e. helping form a bigger commuinity, not a larger division of class. The eco-friendly can’t be stressed enough, I agree….

…so make that the issue, not that growing marijuana indoors, or that indoor marijuana is the problem. People gotta do what they gotta do…it’s ‘spensive otherwise…anybody with experience knows difference in quality has variables within both methods, and that the cream of each crop is just as good as the other’s. The difference between inside and outside is where the walls are in relation to what you’re talking about…happy plants don’t lie.

Your suspicions about marijuana are often lame theories based on second hand false information, not actual experience. Uniformity concerning marijuana buds has nothing to do with outdoor vs indoor. It has everything to do with cloning. That site is shoveling propaganda. But you’re blindly trusting what their saying, going along with their lies, and promoting misinformation.

As one of your longtime readers Suzy, whether or not you provide anything to actually read, I’m amused that you of all personas protest “Your garbled misinformation and propaganda are attempting to spin a social and political myth.”

I haven’t seen (or intended) anything as a smear @ kym…and for all I know suzy is being sarcastic…but I agree with it. I don’t read it as condescending either. I can read the above quote and reply “I’m aware of indoor selling their method. Does outdoor have to play that game too?” Because, like I said, I see a similar truth in what suzy (might be) sarcastically saying, that if you want great marijuana you can do it either way.

The evidence has already been made proof that the snobbish nuances between marijuana grown indoor and outdoor complement eachother. There is no rivalry.

LOL! Did Suzy say that? Well whoever said it… I agree. And I totally understand how snooty a bourgeoisie outdoor grower with their own 40acres to range upon can be to an indoor grower with a couple of lights glowing secretly in a rented garage trying to survive in this world. An indoor grower who btw may have a superior sample of herb. Blessings on you.

What the site attempts to talk about isn’t who grows the kindest bud. It’s about destructive practices, which are destructive whether the bud is kind or not.

btw I don’t see anyone telling you not to run a light in your garage. I hope you don’t run 5000 lights in your garage.

Longwind I think I’m being misunderstood more than I might be misunderstanding you. My response to any of this stems from ambiguous graphics like the one above appearing in several issues of the North Coast Journal, maybe more times and places than I’ve noticed. I suppose it’s who and how I am, but I know a full page color add in the Journal doesn’t cost pocket change, it would have to be a group effort to make the add. But there’s nothing in the graphic telling me anything about who sponsered it and why. What I’m left with is all I get from the graphics: Growing indoors is bad for the environment. Grow it outside “where it belongs.” There’s no more information to go on. I guess you could say I’m playing on the conspiracy that immediately comes to mind, especially when the same newspaper is running articles on the politics of it. In humboldt? whoda thunk…

…anyway, I hope that clarifies something. I’m not pounding my chest about a monumental issue, just curious is all.

Why don’t we put together the carbon footprint that all the potheads fed by that 5,000,000 watt grow and make that the blue footprint?

Easy math.

Say these folks grow pre-soviet Afghan or some shit. Two kilos per light per six weeks no problem assuming they flip every ballast over 24/7 which why not when you got a factory. That’s around 85,000 kilos per year. Say the average head smokes a half gram a day so 85,000 kilos per year is 170,000,000 pothead days of weed or 465,000 pothead years. The energy consumed by the blue footprint is now 465,000 x 21 or 9,765,000 tons of CO2, making the pot factory thing 0.1% of these people’s annual energy use.

Is that a blueberry plant in the picture?

The bag appeal drives sales and outdoor doesn’t match up very well against indoor. Have you heard about the plan in San Leandro to use vacated warehouses for growing that are already hooked up to the methane release at the nearby landfill? These buildings are already plumbed to run a methane generator but what area doesn’t have landfills?

There is no rivalry. Most of the people that talk about this issue are outdoor growers that are feeling the pain of a reducing market share. Indoor growers love outdoor too. This “rivalry” is one sided.

Last night I drove by a parking lot illuminated with probably 20,000 watts. Not a single car in the lot. … WASTED electricity is what should be targeted. Electricity used for growing better weed is at least being used “productively.”. This reeks of a (slightly) hidden agenda.

Without the light intensity of artificial lighting, you cannot produce the same “quality.” This “quality” I speak of is what the market desires. That is why they pay $1000 more per pound.

Grow the same “quality” outdoors, and YOU WIN!!!. You will save $$$$$$ and be ahead of the game. (Then the indoor growers can start complaining about the ecological impact of outdoor grows…hmmmm, what? outdoor growers harm the environment????)

Patrick,

Wasted electricity is the most important issue, I agree. But, as a society we need to reduce what we use. I don’t think it is unreasonable to ask people to think if they need to grow indoor. And, if they must grow indoor, to do so as responsibly as possible.

And, as a non-smoker, I’m speaking without complete knowledge but, I believe that outdoor has an equal “quality.” A lab owner once told me that highest THC he ever tested for came from an outdoor grown plant. It depends on strain and growing conditions. Of course, we all know many indoor growers that prefer to smoke outdoor. I don’t think I know any outdoor growers that prefer to smoke indoor.

And, God, yes, outdoor growers can clearcut, over fertilize and cause algae blooms, drain water from nursery streams, etc. Ideally, everyone needs to look at their footprint and improve it.

Marijuana growers criticizing other marijuana growers adds insult to the injuries of everybody sitting in jail over victimless crimes related to marijuana. Same goes for the “legit” smokers and growers criticizing the “black market”. If all the 215’ers did was fill out some paperwork and drop a few hundred dollars in fees to get to do their thing, they’re in no position to criticize. There are more people who can go to jail for doing exactly the same thing. Paperwork isn’t reality.

The issue in the graphic is a specific method of waste, it doesn’t have to be marijuana related. Just like medicinal clubs are a specific method of doing business…no aspect of discussing them has to be related to marijuana to formulate the same pro’s or con’s. How would parents feel if somebody even just a little bit started to get on their case for helping out overpopulation by having kids? That’s however many more lifetimes of carbon feetprints the planet doesn’t need, unless we are to believe their children are somehow more legitimate than others, or something. I hope this is understandable…is feetprints a word?

Is feetprints a word? No, but it’s adorable. As a wordlover, I can’t help grin over it.

In one sense, no one can criticize anyone else because we all make mistakes, and we all fail to live up to our ideals. However, without pointing out issues, we’ll be like the family with the alcoholic that never discusses the issue. The elephant is in the room and we’ll tiptoe around it trying to pretend we don’t see it.

I agree that it is wrong to vilify people for what I see as errors in judgment. But I think that discussing issues sanely allows for each side to understand the other and to rethink their own position based on new information. I used to think that growing indoors with diesel was fine but then I modified my opinion to believe that whenever possible people should stop. The same happened with growing indoors on the grid.

I understand that a patient in Arcata may have to grow under a few lights. That is their only option. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t discuss the energy use of indoor grows. Likewise, I understand that in order to provide marijuana to the thousands that want it, water has to be drawn from supplies that are already low. That doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t discuss how we need to conserve water and ways to do it.

Discussing problems is the only way to find solutions.
