Indoor VS Outdoor–Does There have to be a Fight?

Facing the outlanders, Humboldters unite and present a solid front.  But amongst themselves, there are some painful divisions.  Indoor vs Outdoor rivals Legalize vs Not Legalize as one of the most difficult to reach across.  I have strong opinions about the environmental damage that indoor marijuana causes.  Yet,  good people grow indoors and good bud is grown there. I try to keep an open mind on the subject but don’t always succeed.  Recently, a friend sent me the following.  It reminded me of this community’s bias and my own. Funny how elsewhere, indoor is perceived as the higher value crop but here in Humboldt it can sometimes have a taint.
Which Side of the Door
I sat at a table last weekend with a group of people who were sharing joints. One asked about the origin of one of the doobies. “Indoor, or out?”
The grower’s pride filled answer, “Indoor,” was followed by a quick declination of that particular jay by the person who made the query.
I am pretty sure that there were more indoor joints in circulation right then among the smokers, but the one joint designated as indoor suddenly became the only one I was sure of the location of in the casual “medicine” exchanges taking place.

Today, as I visited a friend’s light dep greenhouse scene, I had to wonder, which side of the door is this technique classified as? Is light depping 2 summer crops bad? Must the grower label the herb? Not quite natural?

I like indoor. A good grower can produce very good crops indoor, although it costs more money to make the product. It should not be villainized as bad weed, simply because of the side of the door it originated on.

Standing on the outside of the door looking in, I don’t like the artificial light that glows in a room fueled by oil drilled in our oceans and on our lands, but I also don’t like division and self-righteousness.  Can we reach from both sides of the door?  Is there a place for compromise when the world is so damaged already?
Or, does the worst kind of damage happen when doors close and people refuse to open them and reach towards each other?

Passing joints. It seems so taken for granted. But why? Where did the custom start? Why do we do it? Maybe on the surface it seems obvious but when I think about it, I don’t really know if I get it. I wanted to ask about the two sides of the issue. A smoker gets to choose to decline anything of course. I smoke daily but I almost never pass a joint or take a hit from a joint being passed anymore. Maybe I’m wrong but I think it is an interesting theme that winds it’s way through the herb culture like a curl of smoke LOL–ew. There’s legal vs illegal, that’s always interesting, and there’s indoor vs outdoor, maybe I’ll get back to that, but I’m suggesting a third pair of choices that a smoker has. Would things be different if people smoked their own pipe or joint? Do I really want a joint that 4 or 5 people have just had in there mouths? I already have a stash of the best marijuana strain in the county in my purse. It’s legal 215 outdoor.

I had this idea about passing joints in my mind for a while, but I’d never researched it. Then one time, several years ago, I was at a six day yoga retreat in the Santa Cruz mts. We fasted and did intensive meditations. I got my mind really really clear, if you can believe that. But I had to hitchhike back to Humboldt. I stayed at my friends house in Santa Rosa the first night but she is a non-smoker. I didn’t have any pot with me and I hadn’t smoked for over a week. The next morning she had to go to work and she dropped me off on 101. A bunch of hours later I was standing on an on-ramp in Willets, or some place, I don’t even know anymore. I got picked up in the late afternoon by some hippys going to Laytonville. There was a chick driving and two other peeps in the car. Someone pulled out a joint and lit it and passed it. It smelled like some really good bud. When the dude in the passenger seat passed it to me I took a humongous toke to celebrate breaking my pot fast –young and innocent Suzy. But when I let the smoke out of my lungs I’m noticing something kinda funny tasting. I asked them, what kinda pot is it? … “Oh that’s dust, there’s a little PCP in there,” someone says.
“WHAT?”
Angel dust, marijuana mixed with PCP. I had never tried it and I had no intention of doing so. But… I was already starting to feel it, I declined any more, duh. The next thing I know we are no longer on 101, we’re on a lonely two lane road meandering through the mountains. I tried to ask them where we were going but the best I could do was hold on. The sun was setting, I looked out the window and there were snakes crawling on the branches of the trees that brushed against the car window, their long fangs snapped at me. There were snakes crawling in my veins! I could see them –it’s hard to explain the hallucinatory effect, it had an eerie Edgar Allen Poe creepy vibe to it. Well to make a long story short they turned out to be good people but really really fucked up on drugs you might say. I crashed in an old school bus parked on their land and one of them dropped me off in Garberville the next morning.
I survived but … anyway I’m straying from the topic. Is it only me that thinks it’s a curious thing, this ritual of passing a joint? To my little mind it seems like some kind of key to the identity of the culture LOL! Or that is to say, I’m sorta curious about it. But objectively, where did it come from and why do folks continue to do it and everything and will it stop some day? What does it mean anyway? There must be some good bs myths about it out there somewhere.

Fiance here:

Suzy, when you started this I sort of knew where you were going. I was screaming at you in my head not to smoke with people that you don’t know. I’m glad they turned out to be “good people” but in my opinion “good people” don’t offer you a joint laced with PCP without warning you BEFORE you take the hit. These days you have no idea what that joint could be laced with. It scares the hell out of me…….I’ve been there myself but they guys that did that to me won’t EVER do it to anyone else again without thinking long and hard about it.

Oh, and I think passing joints came from an era where there were poor people that couldn’t all afford their own sack so they shared with their friends. Kinda like the real world as opposed to Humboldt where I guess y’all can all afford to give each and every person their own joint to smoke.

But that doesn’t explain why they continue to do it. 99% of the pot smokers around here, rich as they may be, still pass joints, or volcano bags, so that everyone has a chance to slobber on it. Suzy is the rare exception. I think “tribal” is closer to the mark. It probably started in some bohemian enclave like Haight Ashberry where they used to sit in a circle on the floor and play indians passing a peace pipe or something. I saw a video of some old time 70s hippys doing just that in GG Park back in the revolutionary times –ew! I’ll try to find the link. Psychologically it relates to the avatar cowboy and indian toy post.

Grow lights at least doe something: weed is produced. These same folks complaining about the electricity prolly eat fried chicken three times a week so they use more energy but it just get sucked from somewhere they can’t see. Especially if they eat that free range kind. Shit it takes 4000 gallons of water to raise one free range chicken and these knuckleheads are still complaining about 30 gallons of flush water and a couple thousand watts. Psssht. Eggs are even worse energy and water wise pound for pound.

Most folks prefer outdoor because it is usually better regardless of the environment quibbles. Outdoor bud grown right is superior. Some don’t like the inconsistency of some people’s outdoor being bunk.

I’m sorry for what ever it was that happened to you. Drug crazed hippys are into some weird things
A joint passed to you might contain anything. Here’s a rare clip showing what it’s like when a tribe of hippys at their commune in the forest sit cross-legged in a circle and pass a joint and get high

You just never know where a blog post will go. 🙂
Some of the arguments are purely tribal. Others are requests to make sure that whatever you are doing is done in a way that least impacts the common good.
Different folks different styles and concerns. Some have a sense of community and others have a strong sense of self and getting theirs.

Thanks for the post, Kym. As you illustrate so well here, the conflict over indoor weed versus outdoor weed is very complicated. In an ideal world, I suppose people would grow everything the way nature intended. However, Mr. Nice makes a good point about the way other agricultural products are produced in comparison with the environmental impact of cannabis grown indoors. Lots of products we consume waste lots of energy to produce – that doesn’t make it right, but it’s still a fact that we need to consider when trying to put the indoor versus outdoor debate into perspective. Especially when people start to vilify one or the other. Personally, I wish everyone grew outdoors. At the same time, I realize that there are currently very legitimate reasons for growing indoors. A complicated issue, as you so rightly point out. Good information as always. Nice work!

Outdoor light dep can be some of the meanest buds around- outdoor under sky getting rained on and chemtrailed doesn’t really do much for me unless it’s planted within existing vegetation like white thorn or other brush.
Most people don’t know how to grow dope, only weed and that’s why idiots suck creeks dry in their need to overwater and over fert. These same idiots belong in the same holes they bury their trash in, or just dump them alongside the road wrapped up in trash bags like when they dump their garbage.

Indoor vs outdoor, I don’t think you can judge one type of grower as good and another as bad. What I do think you can do is offer what you believe are facts and then let people absorb those facts into their value system and do what they will with them. Most people try to do the right thing but they change their mind slowly.

Suzy, I’ve wondered before why people who would never think of drinking from the same glass will hit from the same joint. But it has to have something to do with the spirit of community. In natural settings (ie not at concert where people face towards an object) people sharing a joint all circle up–very friendly and warm thing to do. I love watching people do this but, even if I smoked, I can’t say I’d want to share spit.
