SoHumBorn Talks About What the People Don't Talk About

“Look! Look at what those ugly pot growers are causing now.” SoHumborn explained to KHSU Through the Eyes of Women host, Kathy Srabian why she worries about writing about the bad aspects of the marijuana culture. She knows that any negative images can cause outsiders to proclaim its small mom and pop farmers as evil.

Srabian encourages SHB with gentle insightful questions to offer an intimate look at her writing and the cannabis world. This interview is a must for anyone wanting to understand growers and for fans of SoHumBorn.  Go here to listen. I teared up several times listening to the thoughtful conversation the two women shared.

Afterward becoming impassioned because of her talk with SHB, Srabian attended last weekend’s HuMMAP event last weekend and came out with a renewed determination to discuss the secretive culture and the ways that the local economy is dependent on it. She worries in a post

Can Humboldt County residents come to terms with and embrace the fact that marijuana cultivation brings much needed revenue to our towns and enclaves?  Can growers and community members work together and reach an understanding that marijuana cultivation could be used to make our communities stronger…

Following up on her commitment to discuss marijuana issues, Srabian interviewed me this last Monday and that piece will air next Monday. I’m excited that so many people are beginning to discuss the ways this county can help and profit from the underground economy in our midst.

Fiance here: She shouldn’t worry about talking about the negative aspects and what outsiders think. Only narrow minded people assume that “all” of any group do any one thing. To get a real picture of what problems need to be addressed and fixed and what postivie aspects there are to the community and the industry every thing needs to be in open discussions. Being emotionally involved on a different level I get torn up inside trying to make heads or tails of what I think on any given day, without the truth I cannot under any circumstance make a qualified decision about anything. When the community tries to hide the negative aspects and sweeps the problem under the carpet it makes me think that things are truly worse than they may be.

Fiance,

You are right we do need to talk about the problems. But it is hard because some people assume that the bad is all there is. There is so much that is beautiful and that I love about the people and culture here. You guys especially, I wish you could see that there is much to rejoice in here. My sons are open to differences in people. Color, race, sexual identity …they don’t matter here.

Kym, one of the reasons we didn’t fight for her sooner was because we know about the good and thought she was better off there……I won’t go into more detail..you know it all and know why we have had to do what we had to do…but I do feel like I was misinformed about many parts of the culture and the lifestyle that they were living and it angers me that so many can know what’s going on with our family and still bend over backwards to help cover it up.
