Arcata Eyes Cannabis

Do you think of ink as black and white?  Do newspapers seem dull visually?  Then you need to get a copy of this week’s Arcata Eye. You’ll be delighted with the eye candy.  Rich color photos, cartoons (I stole the one above from mid paper), and in depth articles open a window into Humboldt’s marijuana culture.

California is at a cannabis crossroads and The Arcata Eye’s current and next issues will delve deep into the various aspects of our county’s special conundrum. The Eye is available on line but these two issues will only have some articles available in the print version.

Courtesy of Kevin Hoover, editor of The Eye, my household is pouring over the first issue.  There are a plethora of articles–including on health, on dispensaries etc.  Opinion pieces on both sides of the legalization issue offer facts and thoughts to mull over. Two HuMMAP (Humboldt Medical Marijuana Advisory Panel) members, Mariellen Jurkovich and Charley Custer offer opposing views. Mark Sailors offers his opinion also.

I’ll be next week’s issue discussing the problems new cannabusinesses face because they are in the forefront of a formerly illegal industry that now is moving towards the mainstream.

As always, don’t forget to pour over Hoover’s version of a police log...He has received national attention for his sardonic take on the local crime scene. I can’t decide if my favorite is “A falling-down drunk in Valley West earned his description, sustaining a head injury.”  Or, “ The world’s most unsympathizable beggar entreated a woman for money at 13th and G streets, his coin-cadging compromised by unzipped pants which allowed a panoramic view of that which no mortal never would have wished to observe. The dangly wrangler ambled away, penniless but well-ventilated.”

Kevin’s a great guy. I have all of his books and read the Arcata Eye every week.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing your interview next week. Or, are they running an article by you?

The Eye has always played with plenty of color ink. The combinations at times are beautiful, but sometimes you wonder if you’re going to go blind trying to read the type in color boxes!

I’ve never really read the police reports before but I may have to subscribe to the Eye just specifically to read Mr. Hoover’s reports. His reporting reminds me of the pre-1930 newspapers I have read when I was doing Family research. The old newspapers were so much more fun to read than today’s papers.

I agree, his stuff does remind me of old newspapers–mainly because he offers some colorful opinions where most would just recite facts.

Yes. Now I need to subscribe, as Mr. Hoover’s reports sound pretty excellent.

There is never a dull moment on your blog, Kym.

His police logs alone are worth the price but he often breaks some great stories. I love this cannabis issue.

Christ, that sounded horribly snotty. Nice write up.

Not snotty, informative. Usually, my mistakes are careless. I know better but here I thought you were wrong until I looked up the idiom. Thanks!
