Ganjasaurus

Painting by Mike Robinson

Marijuana movie, Ganjasaurus Rex is playing at the Arcata Theatre May 26th Doors open at 6 PM.  Get some Ganjasaurus swag, talk Sci fi and even see another Sci fi film

He’s mean, he’s green and he’s mad. From the heart of the California Hills comes a close encounter of the prehistoric kind.

Ganjasaurus Rex (1987) is a pro-legalization science fiction monster movie shot in Humboldt County. A pot grower makes a really huge bunch of pot seeds (Cannabis Sequoia). She gives one to some friends who plant it next to what they think is a rock. The plants are special in that they grow the size of a Redwood and even look like one too. CAMP, the Campaign Against Marijuana Planting, shows up and starts raiding farmers. The giant pot plant next to the “rock” wake up Ganjasaurus Rex who goes out looking for the smell by testing other pot plants, whether still in the ground or attached to CAMP helicopters. Soon the authorities figure out that a monster is on the loose. They seek a scientist that specializes in Ganjasaurus Rex research. The police set up their base in Garberville, Ca. The rest of the movie involves the pot growers being chased by CAMP and Ganjasaurus. Filmed in Shelter Cove, CA with the help of the pot farmers and the scientist.

Shudder. I do recommend getting well and stoned first, because otherwise the movie is definitely not funny.

That movie is funny as hell.

Half the people starring in this movie still walk around Dogtown dressed in the same clothes with the same haircuts except bald/gray…

The blow up doll of Godzilla pulling a net of plants off the fake helicopter,..

All of the pokes and prods at the Nancy Reagan Just Say No campaign and dumbass Ronald Reagan quotes…

The Japanese dude who makes sure there are no Godzilla copyright infringements…

The fake drama of Ganjasaurus Rex being all sad and distressed about the Godzilla nugs being on fire… *sniff*

Even the spot in Shelter Cove with the “rock” where they plant the Cannabis sequoia… haha, I was just hiking there the other day. What a terrible spot to plant weed that would be. Hilarious.

And they have a bunch of obscure cameos from folks like that teepee dude and the bear guy walking around town when Ganjasaurus Rex is about to attack.

My favorite scene is the last one where PB and Owl run across a large field in slow motion and embrace. You gotta see this movie but don’t expect a whole lot, just have some fun. agree with Sophie.

Absolutely everything anybody says about G. Rex is true. We don’t know if it is bad in a good way, good in a bad way, bad in a bad way or good in a good way. An interesting aspect of making this feature-length video (a feat in itself) is that it was written and performed collectively by a ton of people who liked the idea of making fun of themselves and the often ridiculous situations they found themselves in. That makes it good community theater regardless of its shortcomings. Amazing that it has found a following after all these years, but I guess that some people get the joke and enjoy the scenery.

The person claiming to have experience making a previous movie must have been lying. Not once in the entire film did the camera move or even pan for Chists sake. I cant believe I helped pay good money for such shitty cinematography.
