"The Fate of Dr. Phelps' Tenure is at Stake."

Today, Monday the 17th’s Hospital Board meeting is again slated to be tense.  According to Daryl Cherny, the gathering in the Dimmick room at Phelps Hospital in Garberville is because the “fate of Dr. Phelps’ tenure is at stake and your words are needed during open comment at 4pm.”

Cherny worries that the closed session designated Administrator Review at the end of the meeting could cause problems for Dr. Marc Phelps. “The peril of our losing Dr. Phelps is stronger than ever. The machinations made right up until now seemed designed to drive him away. Why? Come to the meeting and ask the board questions.”

Even Dr. Phelps himself suggested that a process of finding solutions is at hand. It’s time to let Mark, the Board and the Administrator work this out.

Daryl misses the lime light so he can’t let it go. More unnecessary histrionics.

My loyalty belongs to Dr. Phelps, I owe him that much. I’m not sure how I feel about the board members or the administrator. I think that they hire on to represent the community that elects them or pays their wages. I would say that before they think that they can be “just fine without Dr. Phelps” they should have someone of Phelps caliber already in place. It’s foolish to run a bluff without the cards to back it up. The administrator nor the board has the history to demand loyalty, in fact they should try harder to be loyal to their constituents.

I trust that Dr. Phelps and the board can work this out to the mutual satisfaction of Phelps and the community. If not, I will be there demanding to know why not.

Unfortunately, Ernie, no one will be able to explain to you what happened on the board side if things don’t work out.. It’s called personnel confidentiality and would get the board sued.

There are two sides here and blind loyalty to one side is an emotional reaction that isn’t helpful to the process.

I never have “Blind Loyalty” to anyone. I like to think that my thoughts are well reasoned. As to the “emotional reaction”, those are your words, not mine. I think that there is room for logical thought here, and that is why that I say the that “I trust that Dr. Phelps and the board can work this out to the mutual satisfaction of Phelps and the community.”

Let’s not play games and put words like “blind Loyalty” and “emotional reactions” in other peoples mouths. We are taxpayers and expect the board members to make good decisions. A statement that “we will do fine without Phelps” (Direct quote from Cherney’s letter: “there are two board members who have stated that the Healthcare District would be fine without Dr. Phelps.”) begs a little reassurance. I assume that statement was made by the board members in a logical premise, and it was not an emotional blurt.

Ernie… When I was on the Redwoods Rural Board, we had to plan for the possible loss of our most popular doc (Bill Hunter) long before he left. Any responsible board must deal with such plans even as they work to keep their valuable and beloved staff. I am certain that the Board is working hard to find a solution to Mark’s concerns. The idea that a roomfull of unhappy clients and residents will foster a solution is simply false. Mr. Cherny has called for the resignation of anyone who disagrees with him. Do you agree with that? I certainly do not.

I’m sure that you will agree that Redwoods Rural has never been the same since Doctor Hunter left. You pretty much exposed my fears as to what would happen if Phelps left. Hunter is still my wifes doctor. Phelps is still my doctor, I do less driving than her.

Without good doctors at the Garberville Medical Center they might as well close the place and save us a fortune in taxes.

As to Cherny or others, I often don’t agree with the wild machinations of board members.

I repeat… I will stay out of that ” roomfull of unhappy clients and residents” and I trust Dr. Phelps and the board members will work it out. Am I not making myself clear?

Ben, I think that you were a great board member. Any organization would do well to have you as a member of their board.

One has to wonder the true issue, if problems between Dr. Phelps and administration have gone on through at least 2 Administrators.

One common source of conflict between health care practitioners and administrations has to do with the necessary compromise between providing thorough, thoughtful care and seeing enough patients to generate the revenue needed to keep the doors open. Traveling long distances to patronize favorite doctors is an individual choice, but an effect of that choice is that it contributes to the risk that we will lose local health care options, including emergency services. Tough choices!
