Bravo! Humboldt County Tourism Site is Promoting Humboldt's Marijuana Premiership to the Cannatourist

Because marijuana is still illegal in most aspects, using Humboldt’s premier status in the field to advertise to the cannatourist is difficult to say the least.  But it isn’t impossible.

Humboldtcounty.com, an unofficial tourist information site for our area, has a discreet example of how to appeal to the marijuana tourist as well as to the ecotourism movement as a whole.  They have a listing of stores that sell hemp products.  However, the site is not content to obliquely refer to our area’s leading role in cannabis production, they address it head on in a whole section under Eco tourism  devoted to MARIJUANA-CANNABIS.  Here is an excerpt:

It used to be a secret that Humboldt County was the marijuana Capital of the U.S. In recent times that fact has been highly publicized in the media. Indeed, there are 420 and 215 friendly stores throughout Humboldt County. Much of this is due to the passage of California State Proposition 215 in 1996 that allowed for the compassionate use of cannabis. There is also a long history of the San Francisco Hippies having moved into especially the southen hills of Humboldt where they began growing marijuana. Garberville in SoHum and Arcata in NoHum are the two best locations to seek your goods. The legal status of the flower is in a permanent gray area since the election of the new government in 2008. You will be best served to acquire a doctor’s permission to enjoy your wellness.

The site links to a list of dispensaries hosted by California NORML and to a search engine of “hippie shops” or “head shops” offered by another site.

_____________

Note: This is not an Official County site and the “about us” and “contact us” links lead nowhere but it appears to be connected with HUMBOLDTLIVING. com. –a site I enjoy. Hopefully, someday the official tourism sites can offer similar pages.

interesting news. I think tourism is a good venue for Humboldt. Hey, how about gorilla tourism. In LA there are tons of people paying to see gang turf. Maybe here they would pay to see grow scenes…. with the growers permission of course. But then again, you could pretend to not have their permission and get them chased away…. LOL. Just kidding.

On another note, I lost your email address, could you drop me a line. Broadband coming your way…..

You had me going there for a moment Kym.

I had visions of our official tourist center running this information.

If I would have had my second cup of coffee I would have realized that the “authorities” around here have no intention of playing up our cannabis connection.

Still, it’s kinda nice that someone has taken this path to increasing tourism.

I think some people would like to but everyone is afraid to be the first person to point out that the Emperor is wearing pot leaves.

Pot is part of our “branding.” We might as well get comfortable, and creative with it.

I don’t know Kym, I think everyone on the planet knows that the Emperor is wearing pot leaf’s in Humboldt County. The tourism thing is a good idea, an if growers didn’t want to do as TJ said you could have a “grow” set up to take them to that wasn’t an invasion of anyones privacy. I know I couldn’t deal with a bunch of stranges invading my space and I know if I lived in your hills that I wouldn’t want a bunch of tourists crusing by in a tour bus gawking at me and my family. Kind of creepy if you ask me.

But there are other ways, such as (no I”m not a dumb bimbo) the fake “grow” or the museum that I saw mentioned on here somehwere and maybe a small theme park. A few “smoke” shops and cafes in all the little towns. Things like that to get it started. Start small and then grow into it, too much too fast would just totally ruin the “landscape” because it would be too hard to contain.

It’s not like you need or want to turn Humboldt in to a huge pot based theme park with a bunch of idiots from all over the planet running around dumping their trash and spoiling the beauty of the place. I mean, close your eyes and think about what it would be like there if something like that happened. Not Good!

Cleaning up Eureka would help!

Well, I didn’t want to insult anyone and I was having a moment of visualizaion…….ferris wheels with big pot leaf’s in the middle, boat trips down the rivers with a barker pointing out grows and growers coming out an shooting at them. Enactment of raids with helicopters dropping in on grows……the tourists could choose to either be on the side of law enforcement or the growers and take part in the action……I think you get the picture!

Yikes,
that sounds a bit plastic and disneyfied. I was hoping for a more authentic Humboldt experience for the tourists. Bed and breakfasts out in the hills. Clipping parlors sans the paranoia. Spas with hemp towels and smoking lounges and classes on cooking with cannabis. That sort of thing.

Hehe, I was making a joke. I know you are all very serious and I know you care more about your home than cultivation. I know that you are trying to be “Switzerland” and present all sides and want to deal with fixing the negative aspects of the culture…….I just felt that maybe tossing in a bit of humor might give you a break!

Hey, when it’s legal, I’m starting one and you can be my first customer. I’ve got a beautiful view and everyone has to smoke outside because I don’t like smoky rooms. I’ll even put back my old box on a hole and every customer can experience the true and authentic pooping in the great outdoors experience. I’ll get rich.

Hi Kym,

Thanks for this article. I didn’t realize the contact us and about us pages weren’t active. I’ll have to fix that! That’s funny. No wonder we don’t have any advertising sales although we rank page one in humboldt county restaurants, HC hotels, HC dining, HC lodging, HC spas, HC retreats and so on. The Benbow Inn did offer to put their ads up for free =) I love that!

I work with Ted Keller who is the actual owner of the site. We’re trying to build a tourism website that will actually attract a new fresh and upcoming crowd of eco tourists, wine, beer, marijuana enthusiants, hemp and organic shoppers, outdoor sports folks and the like. We saw a big hole in what the current tourism sites were focusing on – namely the tourists.

We’re always looking to improve the site. Ted is fully behind the legalization of marijuana so there is the opportunity to advance that if desired 🙂 If you want to know anything else just drop us an email 😉

Thanks for the PR.
