Humboldt's Economy Goes to Pot? Hawaii's Senate Passed Bill to Decriminalize Marijuana

States are decriminalizing marijuana in ever increasing numbers.  This last week, Hawaii’s Senate passed a bill (22-3 how do you like that margin?) to eliminate all penalties for the possession of one ounce of pot except the lucrative fine system of $300 for first offense and $500 for anything after that. A combo of three bills increased the amount of cannabis a medical patient could possess, decreased the penalties for possession, and agreed to tax the herb at $30 per ounce. Granted, the bill still needs to pass the house and get the governor’s signature but this is one more sign that the North Coast needs to get moving on managing marijuana legalization to benefit the local economies. If another state liberalizes their cannabis laws before we do, it will seriously injure attempts to legitimize the marijuana business for when it almost assuredly goes legal here.

Last Night, Anna Hamilton did a talk show on KMUD.  In it she talked about meetings being held ever Monday at 3PM at Calico’s in Garberville to discuss the issues involved in legalization.  Most excitingly, there is a Forum on the 23rd of March at the Mateel Community Center that is seeking to mobilize all aspects of the community from growers to business owners.

I know it’s hard to get people to move fast over there in Hawaii, but they honestly have one of the best climates in the world for outdoor and the local governments would really clean-up if it became regulated. North Shore officials should make this a big priority. $30 an ounce seems extremely high to me, with Nevada the only state proposing a bigger ($50) tax. You gotta start low to make it feasible and then increase it annually like they do with every other damn tax. RPJ my brother, you got it right. Legal sized, appropriate quantity, outdoor grows should be left the F alone! I’ve been documenting Northern California growers since 2005 and as you can see in our movie, “The Green Rush” nobody is safe. Even sticking to the letter of the law on your own land, the Feds can getcha…The DEA is obligated to address any and all pot all the time. They don’t walk by a house with an obvious NEON GREEN garage and keep walking. They take it, and we the people pay them to do it. The west coast will win this one and I’m certain the rest of the country will follow. Tell us what you think of our little pot doc . . It’s currently available on HULU.com for FREE. Spread the word about Legalization, Prop 19!
