Tidal Wave of Publications Aimed at Marijuana Market

Working with Weed

Frequent Photo

The LA Weekly reports on an explosion of new marijuana magazines opening up in the LA market place.  Grow Magazine recently opened its own office in that area and is competing with these new publications.  Many of them are created inthe  mold (albeit much flimsier) of the industry leader, High Times, with bikini clad girls displaying buds…  Tina Dupuy, a former comic, points out in the  LA Weekly article there often there isn’t much to that kind of writing other than “‘Here’s some real good weed’ and ‘Here’s how you make a bong out of an apple.”

As a writer for Grow,  Eric Sligh and I have been attempting to put out other kinds of stories such as what is it like to be raised by Marijuana farmers and domestic violence in the marijuana culture.  We’d like to keep putting out these kinds of pieces.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

I like Growing Edge magazine which is a spinoff of Sinsemilla Tips. Growing Edge only deals with growing without mentioning sinsemilla. Each article is about growing cannabis, no question.

The predictions in Grow Magazine last year didn’t pan out. Purple Kush played a much bigger role than Sour Diesel as was forecast. How about a cannabis divination column that comes true?

Thanks @Kushboldt for the mention, but I don’t publish Growing Edge on paper anymore (since Jan. 2009); it is FREE on the web though, with several articles posted daily @ http://www.growingedge.com

However, I may be coming out of retirement from my days of publishing mj info with Sinsemilla Tips by launching with some other folks a magazine for medical mj cardholders. Watch for it before fall of this year. It will be distributed FREE at dispensaries and grow stores and have the cultivation articles of Sinsemilla Tips and Growing Edge but also other “lifestyle stuff.” The most important thing will be it will be reliable information NOT infomercial articles for a specific company or advertisers. It will be a good reliable read on paper or on your iPad.

I checked out Growing Edge and enjoyed it. Let me know when you start the marijuana mag.

If I had a crystal ball, I’d do that article for sure and Grow would become famous. If you have some ideas on how to figure out what will be the leading seller next year, let me know and I’ll try and write the piece;>

How about an article on pairing different types of marijuana with foods? Or wines? Or beer?

Perhaps a publication that deals only with the medical marijuana research. You could have the latest THC studies worldwide. There’s been a lot of cancer-related applications that readers may not know about.

Yikes, I’d have to smoke for the first one–I don’t. Though maybe I could find somebody who did…hmm.

An article on the latest studies would be pretty interesting. I’d like to try that. Thanks, Dave.

Now that is an interesting site. I wonder how developed society’s taste for cannabis is. This guy thinks weed will someday have its critics who write about flavors http://fermentation.typepad.com/fermentation/
I”m inclined to agree. The site above could have potential!

Trimming machines Kym!!! There have been almost no mention of them in any of the magazines and it is something that is very important for growers to learn about. I know you talked to my friend about doing an article and I think that would be a great read. Let me know if I can help contribute.

We do plan to do an article on trim machines and hand picking–pluses and minuses. I’d love some input on what you think the article should include.

I really like the humanity in your articles. Focusing on the people, culture, and solidarity of family to help dispel the popular perception of growers.

Thank you. That is the essence of what I’m trying to do. Someday, this will melt away and I’d like to capture the sweetness (as well as the bitterness) of this unique moment in history.

I’d love to see more articles on what the world will look like under a legalized marijuana scenario. I wrote an article myself on HL about the reason why marijuana will be legalized stemming directly from the profits to be made off of cannabinoid drugs.

So much is made about marijuana like it is some big deal when we all know how casual and part of life it is up here. I’d love to start seeing more about the true recreational culture and what it would look like on a grand scale.

It’s also interesting that people rarely seem to tie Marijuana Legalization and Hemp legalization together. They are after all the same plant. Legalizing marijuana will have an absolutely massive impact on the green movement and hemp-based products now mostly produced in Canada, Romania or China. Bringing this industry home would be ideal during these crazy economic times. It doesn’t always have to be the drugs that make all the money!

Nico, I’ve read most of the articles on your site (and love it) I do wish you could/would provide a feed though so I could put you on my reader and check back whenever a new article appears.

Hemp should be legal. The illegality of marijuana is criminal. The illegality of hemp is ridiculous!

Hello, my name is Collin Black, creator of Greenville Planet. Greenville is a facebook app, online social game based on growing indoor hydroponics strains all under the protection of medicinal laws. We are loking for businesses that are interested in helping me finance the development costs or help us advertise for donations of the same accord. Please email me back even if you only have a possible direction for me to search. I was scammed out of all my money by a developer and am now trying to raise the remaining balance of what is owed to my new developer that is rebuilding Greenville Planet from scratch. This game is very important to myself and many others, as it will help educate our fans on many topics and areas of medicinal marijuana and polotics.

Thank you,
Collin Black.
