Classic. I can never understand why some people don’t mind their animals. I appreciate the restraint this person shows, as many rural folks have a shoot-bury-shut up policy about this problem. But I’d hate to have to go pick up my dog from them…..might encounter a bit of that “latent hostility.”

i mourn for the chickens, being the pacifist i am, but dogs gotta do what dogs gotta do. hoping things don’t get uglier when the money-for-prisoner exchange occurs.

Neighbors here are pretty good-natured here. The sign probably vented most of the anger. My guess is if the owner keeps his dog at home from now on, the hostility will disappear.

well, i just hope they get their ransom…. if they were egg layers they are worth over $200 a piece in my opinion… as good eggs are .30 cents each and a chicken lays for two years…. plus the owner’s cost of raising those birds up from chicks is not even calculated…. sooooo, looks like it’s gonna cost a bit to get the dog back… that’s only fair…..

Yikes, I know someone whose two dogs killed a bunch of sheep. That ran into the thousands of dollars!

A long time ago I had this beautiful Great Dane that we had trouble keeping home. He kept going to the neighbor’s house (2 miles away) and scaring the poor woman that lived there (Though the only danger she was in was being beaten to death by his tail wagging.) I know how hard we tried to keep him home and eventually we had to find someone who could take him and promise to be with him at all times. I cried like crazy so I’m somewhat sympathetic to the dog owner. On the other hand, a visitor to a nearby house let her dogs run and they cornered my cat. If I hadn’t been there, the cat would be dead, so I know the damage dogs can do.

I imagine both people care very much about their animals so they’ll probably understand the other’s perspective on this and try to work out something that they can both agree to.

Back in the early seventies, when people first started moving up here. They let their dogs run loose. There were a lot of sheep around here then, and two of the new peoples dogs killed nine of a ranchers sheep. The new family was so distraught that they took the rancher to small claims court for murdering their dogs. The judge gave the rancher triple damages for the lost of nine sheep. The letters to the editor flowed freely for a while.

At the Ukiah blog they discuss bringing mobile slaughter houses to chicken farmers. Maybe they could just borrow the dog?

Ok. I am worried. We left for Mexico and Eric was keeping our young dog Kate. Then Eric shows up in Mexico and says his friend is watching the place. Well, we got home this morning and no Kate. Is the dog for ransom white with specckles and spots by any chance. She has never eaten chickens before, but I have no idea where she is, so perhaps she is being held for ransom?
