Pot City

Sent to me by a Friend

After “Intervention In-Depth: Pot City USA” aired, locals couldn’t help but get into the spirit.  Marijuana tourism being one possible way to maintain financial stability here in Humboldt if weed becomes legal, we think that Arcata might consider posting the above signs on Highway 101.

The Times Standard had a generally positive take on the show; however, Heraldo’s readers were less than impressed.

  • They could have driven through Dogtown and tried to do this but everyone would be like no comment.

  • For those of you asking that is a AK47 genus. (They all look the same to me, I’m afraid, even though confessing that makes me feel like Ronald Regan talking about Redwood Trees.)

    • Genus = Cannabis. Specific epithet = sativa. Species = Cannabis sativa. This is binomial nomenclature.

AK47 is a cultivar. The term cultivar is derived from a combination of the terms cultigen and variety. The generic term variety is generally a misnomer when referring to horticultural specimen. Variety is a term normally used when referring to different wild-type varieties of the same species. Wild-type indica or ruderalis could be referred to as varieties of Cannabis sativa, but usually they are referred to by their purported species names. The key to this terminology is that a cultigen is absolutely a human-cultivated breed where a variety can be a result of nature.

The term cultivar can be used to describe a cultivar that is true breeding, an F1 cultivar, or a clone-only cultivar. Cultivar can be used interchangeably with strain when referring to cannabis types. Often, strain denotes a particular mutation/selection of some common cultivar. An example would be the U.K. Cheese (strain) derived from Skunk #1 (cultivar). This is far from a rule as Skunk #1 is also commonly referred to as a strain.

AK47 itself is a Mexican x Columbian x Thai x Afghani origin cross. The breeder does not disclose the exact cultivars of each type nor the breeding steps used to produce AK47.

  • How do people feel about all of the recent media attention. Is it good, bad, inevitable? What has prompted these cable networks to do so many one hour documentaries on marijuana? National Geographic, CNBC, and A&E have aired stories on T.V., but there has also been considerable coverage in print media as well. We all remember the infamous footage of Kevin Hoover knocking on doors, asking to see medical recommendations on the New York Times website. The Washington Post recently published an article on Mendocino county and how domestic production is cutting into mexican cartel profits. Damn! This is turning into a mainstream issue! I would really like to hear some thoughts about this.

  • Gotta love the hearts.

  • Gotta love the hearts.

  • Sorry, but the LAST thing I want to deal with as a resident of Humboldt is tourism based on pot. To me, that’s like a town celebrating it’s wonderful Percocet plant. How about Vicodin Valley?
    Really?
This is what we want to offer the rest of the country?
“Come to Humboldt and get high” ??????

    • What are you offering?

      • Hello? Try clicking on her name. She’s a published novelist. She offers an individual, original and unique voice. One of considerable charm and wit. Jen is an irreplaceable asset to the community, whereas any 12 year old or addlepated loser can grow and sell weed.
Speaking of chocolate chip cookies and such —Christmas is coming.

  • Kevin hoover the editor and owner of the arcata eye, is the guy behind the recent publicity. the man is on a crusade to get rid of marijuana growers in the city of arcata. In the latest “pot city” he brings together a group of his friends who clal themselves “nip it in the bud” these group of friends met every couple of weeks with kevin to compile lists of suspected grow houses in there arcata neighborhoods. these lists were then taken give to local and federal law enforcement. Also the landlords of these suspected houses were notified and almost 60 homes were affected. Out of those 60 homes about 50 of them had grows and the people moved away and or left the rental after there landlord was notified. The show pot city was in my opinion done with too much drama. The man who says his wife can no longer go outside! why because there is sometimes a lingering smelll of marijuana in the air. since when does smell alone do anything? Also the guy says he has to carry a handgun now. give me a break. just cause some grow up gets robed doesnt mean the criminals responsible will come looking for you! Also the couple they interview, kevins longtime buddy the music teacher. He went ahead and blamed growers for the rising cost of housing in arcata. when in fact there is a number of other influencing factors that are not mentioned. such as HSU continualy enlarging enrollment for the last 3 years in a row, plus arcata is not exactly the friendlyest to new development. also the economy has forced the prices of houses up and they are still waiting to go back down in many areas. in many ways arcata is positioned to ride the wave of high prices for some time.
