Perhaps I should have called the photo–Frog Woman. Here she is wisely savoring the wet cool spot beneath my window. I think she is willing me to water.

once a long time ago my mother told me a story about how coyote retrieved the sun from it’s hiding place. in those days there was a severe drought cuz Frog Woman was holding back the waters, she gathered the water all into her self and she swelled and swelled and swelled. she was like an inflated water balloon getting sooooo big. She got so big that her inflated body hid the sun, and the people were cold and it was dark and no food would grow. Coyote, after some nasty tricks that failed and so won’t be mentioned here, ended punching Frog Woman in her stomach and the Waters were released, it felt really really good, like when a water balloon bursts on you on a really really hot day, like today. And so then the sun was no longer hidden, it shone forth like a golden flower that formed a halo for Frog Woman’s pretty head… and the time of inflation and drought was over. –LOL! Nice picture!

That is a twist—the sun is hidden during a drought and then comes out when it rains. I wonder if the story is based on some natural phenomenon or is just a storyteller’s fancy.

some natural phenomenon or is just a storyteller’s fancy

an interesting question, but Suzy would rephrase it slightly if you dont mind. i’d say it like this, “was it based on a some storyteller’s fancy or just a natural phenomenon?”

it cuold be that a writers fansy IS a natural phenomenon, but Suzy sure wouldnt be the one to try and answer that… best left up to scietific research. i checked with my mom abuot the origin of the Frog Women blocks the sun story and she said that Suzy had some of the words and syntax and structure and form and other superficial stuff like that f&%)ed up but otherwise it was still the basic paradigm and symbolic imagery of the original myth. She said the original came from the Salmon Creek area, i forgot the tribe and nobody supposedly knows just how they thought about stuff back then except for a few elders, but the symbolism, this is material from way back when, ancient stuff, like early 70s or even late 60s according to some researchers … but the story was naturally manifested to explain and teach about… you see it was an initiation rite… this was even before the daze of Michael Jacksons face turning into Coyote… but mom says that Frog Woman originally blocked the sun up Salmon Creek and that it’s part of the “Light Depo” mythological file if you want to check it some more .

I am mightily impressed with your research Suz, little is known from that period and there are fewer and fewer elders to go to for the original stories. This is just great to save the myths of those first waves of migrating tribes, or as we say in anthropology…newcomers. I know that they spoke “haten osh bear ree”, traded in beads, and did not understand the agricultural practices of the prevalent culture. We have only remnants of phrases, such as “fah rowt”, “kru vee (the kru is spoken deep in the throat like our gr sound”, and “pisan llub”. If you know more, do share.
I am very interested in the myth of Batgirl, and the Cave, and the phrase “b’at kwano kree see”…do you know anything about that one.

I might add that the people of the early newcomer period were enterprising peoples who found a niche economy in a frequently hostile environment. Not much is known about them. Many were skilled with their hands, making fine arts and crafts, only to leave their native crafts behind as the Wi’is Nip Cult grew in popularity over the following decades. The Wi’is Nip Cult was a subcult of their worship of an annual plant Deity who went by many names. Offerings of smoke were made throughout the day to placate the Gods and insure a greater harvest. I would sure love to hear more about them.

Well said Kym, hybrid vigor is nature’s way of improving…and there are many examples of that in your area. Funny how nature has a difference blending effect by getting dissimilar gene (jean) sets together for a healthier species. The Indians and oldtimers blended together, the oldtimers and the newcomers are still inter-mingling, and your family is a wonderful example of a good mix. The glow of your family posts is still with me from that heartfull 50th. Not all of us have kin and family that can shine good feelings as well as yours, Thank you again for sharing your families abundance of love with us.

ps. do you know any more of those older newcomer phrases, you must have heard them being spoken around you?

here’s a rare photograph of Turtle Woman wearing ceremonial jeans. The pictographs on the right represent the sun being blocked out for the Light Depo cycle. The snake above representing the demon, Camp which came later in the season. On the left the migration from Hashbury to Humbodlt is depicted. On the bottom right are represented beads from the pre-agricultural period down south that were brought north during the backtotheland migration or possibly traded for herbs. It is said by some researchers that the craftwork on the jeans was done with the Wissclip tool but others claim that this costume was made in an earlier era. The rose is a symbol of the plant goddess worshiped by these people * here shown exposed to the sun. But when the demon helicopter flew it is said that she was hidden by safety pins. This procedure was known as camo, pronounced —camo.

Fascinating ethnographalozation! Much like the oldtimers wore the buckskins of the 1st people, and then the older newcomers adopted the buckskin fashion of the oldtimers/Indians (op cit “Easy Rider”);… the camo tribes spread their fashion sense widely. The earlier primitive “pa’tched ceremonial jeans” evolved into woodland short shorts. We have just the barest descriptions of what the Chemise Mountin people wore. We read that they tried to hide their children when the Campmen came as there was a long history of white people taking slaves in the area.

i probably wouldn’t suz, there was a lot that those early new older newcomers that was mystifying for anthroapopleptics…
the newcomers were a colorful people, unlike the more drab migratory tribes we see passing through the area seasonally these days(vis a vis the grunge colored Omless, and the tattered and dreaded white Rastas). it is a sad reminder of the past, that these present day migrating tribes can trigger the post traumatic stress syndrome of the oldtimers, causing them to remember the atrocities perpetrated upon their opinions when the first newcomers arrived. many oldtimers, barbers, and elders of the 1st newcomers leave the area around this time in the year rather than be reminded visually and olfactorally of the the early invasions.
this week these tribes will be passing through on their annual march to the river where they will symbolically attempt to make the Eel River “rise” through unceremonial use of “theo-brownies”, glowsticks, and smoke inhalation. it is sad when the old rituals are lost, it is clear that this is a degenerated mythos.
(few of them probably even remember the original ways of making granola from scratch.)

thanks for trying to explain what it is difficult to grok (a paleo-lithic word little used these days), so many of the children of these people rebelled and embraced the material ways of the oldtimer culture, getting even bigger trucks and losing the oldways. it is sad to watch the passing of the older newcomers counterculture, i just hope people are preserving their quilts and pa’tched jeans and “he-she” beads, and feathered roach clips, etc.

omr, the old news were there back when. These new olds even thought they may smell similar to the old news when they were new news but didnt have the understanding that the old news had in the old days which is proven by their dreaded… But tnext weekend anyway the old new will be not that much of a variance of what was to become the very crux of the new new’s preferment for the dreaded… And so by the time that the new news attired themselves arriving in the that and other similar smelling and smiling masquerade the new by their old world view had already switched fields without the apathetic old news to find the hiding place of this new conscious awareness before their ponytales turned grayor turned out to be something that was dreaded. And so in the other new old’s thinking that the preventable tribe had vented when the begotten dreaded head off to the hills which of course is that which just goes to show that hte new old’s new thought pattern was in tilted spectral gloss only glimpsed by new old (same smell) old news of the dreaded. So but this weekend to pay tribute to the newer of the old new new oldcomers claim Suzy will be at the dreaded . . . and she will be tranlating the symblolism of the new old which has been known to contain if only a trace of what was considered by the old news to be a mainstay of their culture, in other words they were trying to find that which is only a trace of the translated infinite potential that the language of the preventable in thier general fantasy (symblosl on jeans) as a tribute to the worlds freathered father who was before the word peace/love believe it on not and even had a (similar smell) termed by the old newcoming at the time as earth indians not to mention the dreaded . .. Thats why the hideing place of the coyote was considered by the old news as a matter of matter whereas the new news with their dreaded new understandeing of more than is taught in academies of learning sought after the more potent Word ie the dreaded . . . But even a fool can see that the hiding place of any conscious movement of higher consciousness will fail if not appropriated before the apathy of the settled old news prevailes and if theryre not too old what shows a trace when created (or formed) of the same similar smell and even if it did and moreover it would definitly in this day and age by any different name be considered to be a word with the same dreaded . . . ec. within the diameter of the circle of the new news the old news mind set was can only be described as a narrowed (by the continual APATHY that the old news predicated upon the land) narrowed and also saturated by their idealism and the dreaded . . . Which is the answer to your question about the ideal of the new olds preferment for in opposed to the old news dereliction for that which (same smell) carried their old infinitival idea of the dreaded . .. So in conclusion i just will say once again that if your language is translated by unknowing news then the old news will always blame the dreaded . . . So whats a poor dreadlocked white girl child of the phenomena to think when her world veiw is made of the language particles of the old wave that migrated and turned in turn to the dreaded . . . Rite? Thats why we news have the doctrine of the hiding potential that the gnostics were ignorant of and of which the tantrics were fooled by and which we now carry forth Rising to the symbol and shrugging off the new old vision of ideal language and then out of inspired vision we prophosized that before you know it the doubts of old news would be diminshed except for one ignorant person who refused the dreaded . . . So when you see an indian with a feathered roach clip understand that back when the migratory route took the turn for the worse becuz of the limiting of the hiding places by overhead dreaded that to understand it was all too much of a thing about the new olds not visualizing the truth of their own language’s paranoia and guilt suggesting (even if it did smell the same) a pattern of a new older kind of syntax at once recognized by the new news as evne a tuach or what might be considered a oym –than was a brick or kilo from back then and that the old news could no longer pull off llike back inna daze.

omr, you have to remember that they had a much different way of perceiving reality back then than you do. Even if i explained the symbolism of Paisley you wouldn’t be able to understand what it meant to them. You see their world view was so different from yours that you really don’t stand any chance of getting it.

For instance the peace sign was made by holding up two fingers, the index and the middle to form a V shape. But to them it wasn’t 2 fingers that were held up, it was an infinite number of fingers. That’s the way their mind perceived reality. If you waved your hand they’d see it as many many hands, each moment that the hand moved through the air was a different hand making the peace sign, yet they were all one hand. Or the word ‘groovy’, you cant really understand what it means cuz the way their language was structured is so different. A groove was a crease in the old LP records that they used in ceremony back then. And to be in the groove was to shrink in size alla Alice in Wonderland and to actually get into the groove on the record and experience the music from that shrunken (yet expanded) perspective. Going with the flow was another language structure anomaly. It meant to dance within that paradox that Suzy outlined above, i have more, i could tell you the whole legend of Paisley starting with how she hitchhiked from Baltimore to the Height in 1966… but you wouldn’t be able to understand it.
