Why is the sunlight reflecting off one and not the other? Perhaps the top one is merely the shadow.

They were definitely two different colors. I could see it better with my naked eye.

Was the third plane white like the 4-engined plane getting refueled…or a smaller jet?
I am seeing lighter patches on the darker plane consistent with the angle of reflection off the lower plane.

The third plane was light like the bottom one here. I should have taken a picture of it. Has anyone noticed more airplane action? I’m assuming its related to the military base. But there have been a few incidents of low flying large planes like there used to be in the eighties.

Kym, do you recall the direction of the flight?
It is my observation from my SSE hillside perch that there is a NW to SW “slant” to many of the military overflight patterns, most of which I assume to be flying to bases to the SSW of here. That picture is consistent with the white four engine planes emitting “persistent contrails” at higher elevations that are so readily noted by those who watch the sky.
From the ridge top road I travel on many times a week I have a clear view of both the over the ocean skies and the view over, or past the mountains to the east and have eleven years of watching such things. Seen lots.

Seen lots of planes or seen lots of refuels. This is the first I’ve ever seen around here. In the Eighties there used to be a lot of low flyovers and sonic booms. That stopped. But just recently there has been more odd plane action. Not just regular flyovers. This was headed roughly from the NNW to the South.

Kym,

Judging from the light, and the time you note in the caption, are these planes not headed in a northerly direction?

Just seems that if the light is on the right hand side of the plane at that hour of the morning, then they would be headed north-ish.

However, if the sun is high enough (it comes up here at what should be oh-dark-thirty), I suppose I could be mistaken.

It was in the evening, Heather, and they were definitely headed from the Eureka-ish direction towards the San Francisco-ish direction.

Those sonic booms stopped because we the county complained to the right people. Something happened for once.

I’m pretty sure it’s military jets doing refueling docking maneuvers. They don’t refuel civilian planes in mid-air. And it takes a bit of practice to dock that itty-bitty hose to the right place on the plane.

I have noticed increased traffic in the skies above as well, though they aren’t flying low down here. Could be one of two things: http://www.nwtrangecomplexeis.com/ or since North Korea continues to make a stink, there’s been a little more emphasis on patrolling the North Pacific.

Mark says we are one of the training areas for the military because they can coast out to the sea if they have any problems and the population here is sparse enough or in other words ‘expendable’. He says the hook up practice starts just north of San Francisco.

I also wanted to note that they must have been hooking up for some time now for the sex to have become plain. ha ha.

It’s been a common occurrence for years, just usually a little inland from you, heading south to north. They are way up there and by the time you can hear them they are past you.

I instantly thought of the opening credit sequence in Dr Strangelove. The refueling is set to Strauss’s Blue Danube waltz, if I recall correctly. Shows the whole “hooking up” without a blush.

Nice catch!

Back in the 80s, Kirby and I were out at Bear Harbor and a refueling combo flew over rather low. I’d like to think it was a blackbird spy plane but I can’t really remember. It seemed the Lost Coast would be a relatively private area to do the job. Maybe your guys were a little inland of where the should have been. In the late 80s, in Salmon Creek, we were flown by several C 130 spy planes so low I could see the pilots and the rivets on the planes. Antennas sticking out all over the place. They probably mapped every water system in So Hum.

I would think they would load the fuel in the rear part of the plane, not the front.

Reminds me of dragonflies doin’ it. Right in the neck.
Recently my weightlessness classes at the river turned into a small dragonfly orgy. A good blog commenter is always looking for good material, so I allowed 5 dragonfly couples to stay awhile upon my floating torso and ‘do it like they do it on the Nature Channel’. The only remarkable thing to report is that the little blue males turn a very nice lavender plum, the body and every tail segment save the last active one, which stayed blue during the few minutes I watched.

Getcher facts straight fella! You saw them making out, where the male grabs her by the neck. If you had seen the big whoop-de-doo you would have reported the dragonfly couples in wheel position. As Ms. Blah Blah once said… sloppy research is the scourge of the blogosphere.

I’m sure they were on a training exercise for refueling. We have the same large planes flying low overhead quite often, usually in a series of three planes. Hardly notice them anymore.
