Romantic and overblown, I know.

I don’t ususally manipulate photos so intensely but this one craved it.

Call it a match made in Humboldt.
The highly unusual Latin American magnificent hummingbird that showed up at a Pigeon Point Road feeder in 2004 apparently has a son — a cross between a magnificent and a resident Anna’s hummingbird.
It may be the only hummingbird in the world with a bright yellow neckband, or gorget.
Jerry Mahlberg, who lives just a stone’s throw away from where the magnificent was first spotted east of Eureka, has taken pictures of the fascinating cross-bred bird. A male, the bird’s plumage is especially brilliant.
”It’s one of the most beautiful birds I’ve ever seen,” Mahlberg said. “He’s just so beautiful.”

  • This is a wow, Kym. Not overblown at all, but definitely romantic. 🙂

  • Wonderful. It is amazing the different feel a little “fuzziness” can give an image. Yes, romantic, yes, perfect contrast between the stillness of the flower and the speed of the wings. I love the whole image.

  • I like the body language in the plant, almost looks like it is taken aback. More than a pretty shot.
