Only in Humboldt: Sheriff Trucks Loaded with Marijuana

Sheriff Truck Loaded

Taken YesterdaySeveral months ago (oops)at the Fernbridge Cafe

Yesterday, local resident Joyce Benton chanced upon a true Humboldt moment–two sheriffs’ trucks fully loaded with marijuana parked in front of the Fernbridge Cafe while the deputies sat inside enjoying lunch.

By the time she parked and got her camera out the Sheriff’s were leaving.  She secured permission for the photograph but some of the officers didn’t hang around.  You can see one vehicle pulling out in the background.

I can’t decide if the deputies just decided that the 10 or so residents living in Fernbridge are so honest that no one would try and take anything or if (this being Humboldt) that the amount involved was not worth someone’s trouble to steal.

I love this place!

I also have to point you all to another blog that I found that has another take on the same story but a very similar title.  I swear I didn’t steal hers.

Brenda Godsey with the Sheriff’s Dept. has promised to get back to me with more information on what bust and where but she is understandably busy with wrapping up a previous crisis.

Wonderful find Kym, and another great shot by Joyce. As one friend at my favorite Brooklyn blog put it … “somewhere Tommy Chong is in tears.”

On the standoff front, the Cutten school was locked down for safety after a suicidal man barricaded himself in a residence adjacent to the school. Negotiators talked him down and got him to throw the gun out of the window. He was taken to Semper Virens.

The gun it turns out, was an air soft pistol, a replica, not the real thing.

Thank you for the Update on the standoff crisis. A replica gun could have easily led to a tragedy of suicide by police–very hard on everyone involved. I hope the poor man finds some peace and his family is okay. If kind thoughts help (and I tend to think they do) I’m sending some their way.!

Chong wouldn’t have been crying though. He’d have been scheming on how to get his hands on some;>

For the record, she did not need permission to take the photo. If the officers are in a public space then anything they do is subject to filming or photographing and it’s not considered interference in the duties of an officer just because it makes them nervous. The case law is very clear on that point.

Erick, you are correct. But I suspect Joyce was just showing common courtesy by asking to take the picture first. Imagine that! Showing courtesy to law enforcement folks!

I predict that Ms. Godsey will not respond as the pot was left unattended and there must be a code problem here. Sheesh!

Ben, I have sent two e-mail responses today directly to Ms. Kemp in response to her inquiry. I am hopeful that she will provide updated information at her earliest convenience, although I understand she most certainly is not obligated to do so. In the meantime, the photographer herself (Joyce Benton) provided the same information as I, but directly to the blog: the picture was taken several months ago.

As to whether or not the marijuana was left “unattended,” the deputies were inside and their vehicles were within full view to them.

And finally to Ben, please advise what “code problem” of which you are certain. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and hope the only code problem you’d be concerned about is the labor code and whether or not these deputies had a few moment during their day to sit down and have a cup of coffee and and sandwich.

Whoops, Sorry Brenda, I wasn’t intentionally not acknowledging my error

I wasn’t home all day. After reading your email and when I got home, I sent Joyce an email questioning if there had been a misunderstanding and she responded below.

I have company and just got caught up in my other life (the one without a keyboard) and didn’t pay much attention to the blog (except for sleepily uploading a flower photo) til I got on this morning and saw your comment waiting to be moderated.

Next time my husband tries to persuade me to come to bed and stop messing with the computer, I ‘ll at least make sure to read the comments and my email!—(Yes! Another excuse to spend more time diddling online.)

Kym-
Your blog is lovely and informative. I’m sorry I made you feel the need to apologize. I’m a faith reader (and viewer of the beauty found here). Thanks for all of your diligence and hard work.

Warmest regards!

Oops! That should have been “faithful reader.”

But “faith reader” is kind of funny . . .

Does a faith reader know without asking what religion you are? Or can they help you find your lost faith?

Kym, Well put – exactly why I took the photo. Anywhere else in the world this situation itself would turn into a major crime scene. Only in Humboldt! But for the record, I took the photo several months ago. Joyce

Joyce, sorry about the misunderstanding. I wondered about the size of the plants. I thought it must have been a depravator grow.

The photo just makes me smile. Trying to describe the casualness that runs through our little community about things that shock the rest of the outside world is one of my favorite writing jobs. Your photo caught that point of view precisely.

I figure the officers know Fernbridge is not exactly a hotbed of crime. (and they were probably sitting where they could look out anyway.)

The photo made me laugh because it was just so Humboldt.
