Cat's Ears
Cat’s Ears
Calochortus elegans
Frequent Photo
The bulb of this pretty little flower is edible. It likes shallow clay soil that dries out completely during the summer. I wanted to show the pretty shape of the stem and leaf but here is a closeup of a cat’s ear from last year.

Kym, absolutely stunning! But, please tell me that you tweaked the color, because my cat’s ears are much whiter than those.
I didn’t tweak the color but because of the light background the flowers appear slightly darker than they really are. The closeup is about the color around here. Various photos on the web have a variety of colors.
Beautiful and sweet.
I want some of those!
They would be hard to grow in a regular garden because they need to dry out in the summer. Maybe in pots would work?
Such a beautiful little flower! It looks so delicate.
Gorgeous flower, again. I remember the picture from last year. Both of them are very nice photos.
Is it a native plant?
yes it is!
I love these flowers. There are quite a few down on the slopes right above the falls and that is pretty close to the color we see.
This photo reminds me of how beautiful spring is in your area.
Love the color and depth of field. Beautiful capture. And yes, they do look like cat’s ears!
I’ve never tried eating one of the bulbs… They are so small.
These are just amazing, I haven’t seen them in purple!
I have never seen this flower before. Fascinating and beautiful. I just have to get out to California!
