How to Sprout Seeds for Planting
Sprouting the Seeds
Daily Photo
Recently, I heard of a new way to sprout seeds for planting and the mother in me smiled at dark warm wombs for baby seeds to grow.
Dampen a brown paper towel (no bleach), sprinkle with desired seeds, place in a small plastic baggie (Ziploc sandwich bag), and insert next to your skin. The photo above shows an older farmer pulling the seeds in the bag from his long red underwear. The consistent warmth encourages sprouting and the proximity to the gardener makes sure they aren’t forgotten and left to dry out.

Cute, reminds me that I need to get into gardening, maybe this year.
simple yet effective.
Interesting technique, but I don’t think I’ll be trying it! 😛
Are you sure those are seeds? Was that photograph taken in Columbia or any neighboring country? 😀
Brown paper towels will not prevent mold… could be big trouble. White works fine. The blue shop ones have something toxic to seeds in them, avoid them.
What sort of seeds are they? Inquiring minds want to know. I think this method would work well with a certain sort of seed prevalent in Humboldt.
Yes, those are marijuana seeds. I’m writing a book about the marijuana culture. However, the seed starting method would work well for any seeds. Ben, the person who let me photograph him didn’t mention having had trouble with mold in his many years of starting them this way but I’ll check with him. I remember him telling me that the blue shop towels don’t work also.
I don’t think I’ll be trying this, but thanks for the tip in case I ever do! LOL BTW, nice bright long johns. I haven’t ever seen any so handsome-looking.
Speaking of sprouting, does the “best planting day” refer to actually putting a seed in the ground, or the seed touching water? Should one begin sprouting on the best planting day, or could you plant pre-sprouted seeds on the best day?
jim, that is a question that had me throwing away my farmers’ almanac 20 years ago when I first started a vegie garden. I should re-approach this question with some of the farmers I know because I just do it when the sun is shining and I have time and I know I could have better results if I paid more attention.
Your model/farmer reminds me of a mother hen, keeping those babies under a wing. Looks like farming is “close to his heart”…. Is that next year’s crop in your long johns or are you just happy to see me?
maybe not too practical… seeds are fragile when opening but i do like the idea.. it is “cute”
here’s my guide to germination:
