Hey Kym,
My Daffodils are just now poking their little green fingers up out of the ground.
I came by this morning to eagerly see what you would post for the 1st day of Spring.
You didn’t disappoint.
Yellow and orange scream out “Spring!” and the pollen just inside the open flower looks poised to be scattered by the wind or to be enjoyed by a lucky bee or bird.
Beautiful, but for someone like with me spring allergies, dastardly as well. 😉
“Daffodils” (1804)
I WANDER’D lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the Milky Way,
They stretch’d in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed — and gazed — but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
By William Wordsworth (1770-1850).
Ernie,
I had to memorize that piece of poetry when I was in the 8th grade. I still repeat it often, especially this time of the year and it never fails to make me smile.
Here is an entry from Wordsworth’s sister’s, Dorothy, journal telling of the day She and William found the daffodils:
“When we were in the woods beyond Gowbarrow park we saw a few daffodils close to the water side. We fancied that the lake had floated the seeds ashore and that the little colony had so sprung up. But as we went along there were more and yet more and at last under the boughs of the trees, we saw that there was a long belt of them along the shore, about the breadth of a country turnpike road. I never saw daffodils so beautiful they grew among the mossy stones about and about them, some rested their heads upon these stones as on a pillow for weariness and the rest tossed and reeled and danced and seemed as if they verily laughed with the wind that blew upon them over the lake, they looked so gay ever glancing ever changing. This wind blew directly over the lake to them. There was here and there a little knot and a few stragglers a few yards higher up but they were so few as not to disturb the simplicity and unity and life of that one busy highway.[6]
My bright yellow daffodils are nearly gone now, but I have two or three like yours in this photo that just started blooming, and another little patch that have yet to open up, so I am not sure what face they will present.
Happy Spring to All! And Happy Birthday Hale!
Beautiful! My favorite part of spring!
lovely thread, all! i love my daffodil patch. each of the different color combos has a slightly different subtle scent.
o happy day of greenspring and daffodils.
I love that passage. You can almost see the poet and his sister raving about the scene and each, in their separate ways recording the scene even using the same language.
My wife would rather have a bouquet of daffodils than roses. There is just something special about a daffodil.
I haven’t spotted any daffodils here yet. My tulips are just poking out of the ground, as are my day lilies. We’ve had three beautiful days in a row – yay!! Beautiful capture of your daffodil, Kym.
I had to memorise that poem at school too. Thanks mjean1 for the background story
I had to lick my laptop’s monitor just so that I could taste that sunshine!
Wonderful image Kym! The composition, light/shadow,and sprinkle of pollen – love it!
Thanks you guys!
