Sunrise above the Fog
Peace in the Valley
Daily Photo
Peace in the Valley
Well, I’m tired and so weary
But I must go along
Till the lord will come and call, call me away, oh yeah
Well the morning’s so bright
And the Lamb is the light
And the night, night is as black as the sea, oh yes
(alt lyric: ‘and the night, night is as fair as the day, oh yes’)
(There will be peace in the valley for me, some day)
There will be peace in the valley for me, oh Lord I pray
(There’ll be no sadness, no sorrow, my Lord,
no trouble, trouble I see)
There will be peace in the valley for me
Well the bear will be gentle
And the wolf will be tame
And the lion shall lay down, down by the lamb, oh yes
And the beasts from the wild
Shall be led by a child
And I’ll be changed, changed from this creature that I am, oh yes
(There will be peace in the valley for me, some day)
There will be peace in the valley for me, oh Lord I pray
(There’ll be no sadness, no sorrow, oh my Lordy, no trouble, trouble I see)
There will be peace in the valley for me, [for me]
You tube version below the fold.
I grew up on Johhny Cash and his version of this song brings tears to my eyes. Originally this was written by Thomas Andrew Dorsey (not the same guy as Tommy Dorsey) for Mahalia Jackson and it was the first gospel song to ever sell 1,000,000 copies.
This video is interspersed with death penalty interviews. I couldn’t find one without but in the end I decided to go ahead and use it. Somehow, it seemed appropriate.

Peace. Today in our global world I struggle with the images of hate that I see happening. How can man do that to his fellows? And yet, I see in myself anger toward even those I love. Peace. We all need it. This post caught me at a fragile moment Kym, and I was brought to tears too. I love Johnny and the interviews were powerful. I don’t believe in the death sentence, 2 wrongs don’t make a right.
Wonderful photo and the snow is a nice touch. I like the way it builds up on the bottom of the screen.
For TJ
You Are a Marvel …
Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe,
a moment that will never be again…
And what do we teach our children?
We teach them that two and two make four,
and that Paris is the capital of France.
When will we also teach them what they are?
We should say to each of them:
Do you know what you are?
You are a marvel.
You are unique.
In all the years that have passed,
there has never been another child like you.
Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers,
the way you move.
You may become a Shakespeare,
a Michaelangelo, a Beethoven.
You have the capacity for anything.
Yes, you are a marvel.
And when you grow up, can you then harm another
who is, like you, a marvel?
You must work – we must all work
to make the world
worthy of its children.
…. Pablo Casals
Beautiful shot, Kym, as usual.
That’s a gorgeous picture, Kym. And maybe someday we will join the EU in banning capital punishment. And quit harming our fellows.
Another beautiful photo. The soft fog looks like snow.
Oh wow. That photo is just gorgeous! The fog almost looks like snow! Do you get snow in Humboldt county?
I hope we ban capital punishment someday. Someday.
Kym, you are the marvel.
I wish I could tell you how many times that I have lived the moments that you capture in the photos that you take. I wish I could tell you how many times that I have stopped my truck alongside the road got out in the chill of the morning air, looked over the Eel River canyon and was caused to wonder and reflect. Caused to soak in the beauty and the wonder, and realize that nobody can appreciate this canyon like me. But, then your photos have proved me wrong. You have an eye for the things that this canyon gives us, and you capture that feeling better that my imagination ever could. I’m so grateful to know that I’m am not alone, and if you and I can see these things, surely others must see them too. It makes the world a better place for me.
Amazing photo – very painterly – reminds me of one of Michael Guerrero’s serigraphs…
Thanks Rose. That was beautiful.
Kym, until I found your blog, I didn’t realize such magic lurked to the north. You bring so much to everything you do. Thank you.
TJ, I hope your fragile moment was really only a moment and you are feeling a bit better. I, too, needed peace–not silence but a gentle feeling in my heart.
Rose, that is beautiful. Tears slipped into my eyes while I read. I wanted to say all that to my almost 16 year old. The thought of his horror stopped me and I just whispered I love you to him instead but it felt inadequate.
Silverstar, I agree. I’m tired of people thinking that hurting other people will somehow make the world better.
Elizabeth, yes we get snow. Though not where I am in the coastal hills but it usually snows a couple times.
Ernie, You do the same for me only better cause you have all that history and information that I want about this beautiful wonderful place we live in. I know I sound sappy but I can’t help love this place entirely–and I love that you do, too!
Bob, thank you. I hadn’t ever seen his work before. Very soft and pleasing. He must love this land here, too.
Aunt Jackie, thank you. The fog with the sun rising throwing blankets of light across its whiteness is almost as blinding as snow in sun.
Elaine, thank you and thank you again for pushing me to do the (almost) daily photo. Your blog has been an inspiration.
Kym… The snow effect is so cool. I thought my laptop was having a problem for a moment. Love it!
An exceptional photo Kym. Nature puts on quite a show out there and I’m so very glad you are about to both capture and share it.
Ben, The snow is quite mesmerizing and peaceful.
Forkboy, thank you. We who live here are very lucky.
That is quite a beautiful capture, Kym. You caught the perfect lighting for it with the fog filling the valley below and the layers of mountains above. With the trees in the foreground, I feel as though I’m standing on your mountain top with you. Well done.
exquisite! such a fine photo. kym you have captured one of those shots that we who live above the fogline see so often we sometimes fail to stop for the beauty-in-the-moment. sure looking forward to your photography book in my collection! hint?!
listening to your commenters is a reminder to be more present and enjoy the wondrous life in nature we have in the country, and not take for granted scenes that would be rare to a city-dweller.
your photos make me feel even more grateful and fortunate to live where we do. thanks
Absolutely, positively LOVE IT! Something about the colors and the fog makes the photograph sooooooo peaceful! (And I am taking a break from studying)
Toni, thank you. And if you ever get out this way, I’ll take you up here. You’ll love it.
Olman, thank you. the comments help me enjoy what I have here. People make me feel so lucky.
Maggie, With everything you had to do, you’re probably exhausted. Hope finals are going well though.
