Humboldt Grass
The Golden Grass of Humboldt
Daily Photo
We needed one last look back at the warm grasses of September because cool weather is sending foggy tendrils into the valleys and even over the hills of Humboldt.

What a neat photo. Crisp and sharp yet soft and subtle. I really love the shades of tan and brown – if only my livingroom walls had those colors!
I’m sure hoping Santa will leave me a 2009 calendar filled with your beautiful photos this year.
And this picture is perfect for August or September in Bluelaker’s calendar. Perhaps some people in my life will get calendars, too.
I’m glad you like this Sandi, I liked it, too, but thought it might be a bit subtle for most people.
Aunt Jackie, I have got to get on finding a calendar making place. It seems to me someone left a link in a comment but I don’t know where.
Silverstar, your photos would make a great calendar.
Here is a site for free calendar software.

Kodakgallery makes them, but they are about $20 each which is a bit steep.
Years ago I tried to learn the names of our grasses. Bought a key (how to know the grasses)… It turned out to be really hard and I drifted off to other pursuits. In the time since white settlement, the grasses have changed more dramatically than any other biological group. Our meadows look nothing like they did in 1850. Nevertheless, they are still wonderful and diverse. What a beautiful picture.
Aunt Jackie, I like this. I asked and I received!
Ben, I guess the grasses have changed so much because their life spans are so short?
Sandi, make a copy of the photo and take it with you to almost any paint store and have them match the color. I have done this several times and the results have been quite good.
I agree, the color is perfect for a warm and comfortable living room.
Native grasses were quickly replaced with alien species when the homesteaders and their livestock arrived. The original inhabitants of the land deliberately cultivated certain species for grain/seed production; coupled with the loss of that management, the introduction of exotic grasses changed the landscape dramatically.
But it’s still beautiful, and some of it is still edible!
I’ve always wanted to know about the native grasses. All I have clear is the Calif. Bunch grass.
Great photo. It would seem nothing special. But there is so much peace and perfection in it.
