Two Stars and an Eclipsing Moon
Eclipsing Moon
The fog came in and covered the moon before it completely eclipsed. Still, my middle son played guitar while the smell of BBQ-ing pork steaks wafted across the dark.
The pictures I took aren’t NASA quality but they turned out better than I thought.

I forgot to look! Shoot!
Thanks Kym – Goldfish and I just got back from snowshoeing and she was lamenting the light snow that was preventing us from seeing the eclipse. I told her not to worry, someone would take a good picture and post it on the internet . . . what I didn’t know was it would be the first place I looked!

It was incredible. The moon was so red, the sky so black and the stars so silver. It was like an Impressionist’s painting–all emotion and somewhat unbelievable.

Great shot! So much fun!

That’s when living away from “city lights” is such an advantage. I didn’t bother to get the camera out (past experience has been a disappointment) but did just stand and enjoy. I always laugh when Jon Pedicino (our resident Astronomy Prof here at CR) says this planet or that one will be OBVIOUSLY red…not with THESE eyes, Jon. But the eclipse was indeed red and you could really see the orb-ness of it — not the normal two-dimensional disc in the sky. Jon said Saturn would be right below and to the left of the moon so I’m sure that’s what you got.

Hey, How come none of you grammar freaks noticed I used the wrong article in the title? I looked like a Humboldt English Major there for a couple hours.

I didn’t know about the eclipse until this morning…where the hell have I been?

Could you have seen it from under all those city lights?
[Heh, heh, Nasty country sneers at the big city boy]

Maybe….maybe not. I guess now I’ll never know.

Carol, I loved the whole experience and Dan, I’m sorry you missed it because it won’t happen again for a couple years and it was rather special.

I did notice the “a” instead of “an” but was being polite and not mentioning it. 🙂

My first time posting a comment!!!
I had no clue that there was a Lunar Eclipse Wednesday night. Some Liquor store dude told me. Lucky for me, I was driving back from S.F. that night, and I was driving from Eureka to Arcata during the Eclipse, and when I got home, I stayed outside and watched until I saw the orange color fading.
It was a little hazy watching it in Arcata.
Oh, and TY for including my blog in your blogroll!

Beautiful picture, Kym.
I have to admit that I noticed the incorrect article but also know that Ernie reads your blog, and I didn’t want him to yell at me again. ; )

I write these posts so fast sometimes that I make tons of mistakes. Normally I’d say point them out but Kristabel, you are right, we could get in trouble with Ernie. Most of you (especially you Aunt Jackie) all have my email though and can politely slip me a little note and Ernie won’t ever know;> I promise to make only a few growly comments about anal retentive grammar monkeys!
Boy, Thanks for coming over and I’m glad you didn’t miss the Eclipse (Although, I worry about you receiving your news from Liquor store dudes;> while driving no less!)
Thanks for the nice words on the photo, Jack!

It was so cloudy we couldn’t even see the moon.
what a bummer.

Kitty, I’m sorry you missed it. The moon was actually red. I don’t think I will ever forget it.

The clouds did have a reddish tinge.
Right around the time it began, we did have a clear shot of the moon. I ran in to get my camera and it never came back out again.

That’s unfair Kitty. Like a Moon strip tease;>

[…] Two stars and an Eclipsing Moon is the only other halfway successful attempt I’ve made. Is it just the camera or is there something I could do to get rid of the grainy texture? […]
