The ridge was smoky from some burn and not particularly beautiful. I shot a couple photos trying to capture the ranch horses by sunset light but I was pretty sure they wouldn’t come out. Just before I left I shot this one and it felt right. I wish it was a little sharper but I love the colors and the composition.

Yes, with all the rich darks and orangey golds. Reminds me especially of that self portrait painting he did as an older man. (okay, I know he did lots but it reminds me of one that I can’t think of the name right now and it will bug me all day now.

WOW! Great shot. This looks great for a bookjacket or something. Lately I have books on my mind… so that was the first thing that came to mind. Good luck and great work.

Paul, thank you. It is heartwarming to get a compliment from a stranger.

Headwrapper, the link won’t work. Here is one that is the same color scheme but not the one I’m thinking of. http://userpages.umbc.edu/~ivy/selfportrait/3rembrandt.gif

Got that one!

I wonder why the lines that direct the eye back towards the 3rd seemingly insignificant person?

To point out how most are unaware of the Living Christ? Or? Whatever your beliefs beautifully constructed.

Great question. The lighting and the story seem to illustrate the idea of “Jesus is the Light”. Or in other words, the source of light –which is what the dramatic lighting in the painting seems to be emphasizing. The story tells us that he was revealing at that moment that he was not ‘only’ a man. The small figure on the left suggests to me that a “seemingly insignificant person” is also a ‘Christ’ of sorts (or a source of Light)–to those who’s eyes have been opened.

I like your explanation both of the painting and as a truth in itself–the idea that we all have ‘light’ to share resonates in me.

Thanks, but I like your interpretation too because the painting also conveys to me the idea of someone having an amazing or mystical or mythological like experience, while to others, like the figure on the left, it’s just another day, as in –‘just another sunset’.

Similarly, the theme of this Bruegel painting The Fall of Icarus shows Icarus, who tried to fly to the sun, falling into the sea (bottom right) unnoticed by everyone going about their mundane day.

I love the Bruegel, I hope linky worky this time.

ooops, I meant ‘flew too close to’ not ‘tried to fly to’…

I love that Bruegel! Bosch, too, has that “it’s just another day” feel to even his hell paintings (or maybe his everyday is hellish? ;>)
