Wow. I could sure get used to seeing that every morning.

Sometimes, when I have to drive 3 hours round trip to pick my kid up from school (like today) I wish I lived in town. But, mostly, I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

You bring up a good point. I guess when I finally get that cabin in the wilds of Maine, any future offspring will be home-schooled in preparation for the inevitable collapse of society…and the zombie apocalypse which will surely follow.

Oh sure, rub it in! “Above the fog”…. Just F.Y.I. the fog was gone by ten… So there, Ms. Above Itall.

I like your photo’s. I’m getting more addicted to them than the morning weather forecast.

Okay, the school thing. Where do you travel to take your kids to school that takes that long. Just the town, you don’t have to be specific if you don’t want too.

They tell us repeatedly that our children’s only chance in our modern society is going to depend upon a good education. Then, they repeatedly cut the education budget and school programs. What’s a parent to do?

My kid lives in L.A. and my grandchildren attend school down there. I think that I’ll call my daughter and get her opinion of the school system. I’ll let you know.

Dan, -Seriously one of the most valid reasons for homeschooling up here (although there are plenty others) is to cut down on drive time. It you go to the wilds of Maine check out Mt Dessert Island. One of the prettiest places I’ve ever been. (Great Lobster, too. Someday when the statue of limitations runs out I’ll tell my story about night dives but for now I’m still in love with my husband and don’t want him to go to jail.)

Ernie, Hmm, I can’t help it– you lowlanders don’t know what you’re missing and I have to educate you! Although the Eel River Valley where you live is beautiful too.

My son goes to Academy of the Redwoods at College of the Redwoods. It’s a 4 year high school program that simultaneously provides 2 years of Jr. College. A lot of people haven’t heard about it but it is a wonderful alternative to regular high schools.

My main complaint with most schools is too little choice for the students and too many kids in a classroom. Unfortunately, AR (the Academy) still has more kids than I would like but, on the whole, kids get more choice in their future.

For us, My husband works in Eureka, the commute to the school isn’t that bad (today he has Lincoln’s birthday off so I’m splitting the driving with a friend whose kid goes there too) but for other people the commute is onerous.

Homeschooling or small schools like Salmon Creek are really the way to go for your child but the scary thing is if caring parents abandon the public school system then what will happen to the rest of the children.

How long is the statute of limitations…because something tells me that’s a great story!

My sister’s an elementary school teacher here in NYC, and I hear from her how bad things can get (that’s not to say that the public schools in NYC are ALL bad), but we were both products of the NY public school system and we did okay. I guess. 🙂 Our parents, however, went to Catholic school, and refused to put us through that.

My personal philosophy regarding the schoolin’ of our young’uns is this: it all comes down to funding. Public schools are grossly under-funded, leading to over-crowding and an inability for already over-worked teachers to give every child the attention he or she needs (wow, looks like I found the hypen key!). But, I don’t think I would have received a vastly greater education if I had gone to a private school.

Of course, I was always a bit of a nerd.

Kym, can you clarify that for me? Do you graduate with an AA degree. And, can you get a BA with just two more years of University? Is there a fee? Why doesn’t anyone know about this program? It seems ideal for a serious student.

Dan, I’ll have to figure out if I can tell the story. I also went to public school and muddled through ok with some great teachers but, schools are underfunded in my opinion.

Aunt Jackie, Thanks!

Ernie, yes, you graduate with an AA (at least that is the goal) and that allows you to apply to a 4 year college with 2 years under your belt. The only fee is a 12 dollar a semester health fee and all books are paid for (you don’t get to keep them or write in them though.) Thus saving you or your parents two years of college fees! Plus you are 2 years advanced on other high school students.

It is a new program (3rd year) and CR isn’t that excited about high school students on campus but it is a wonderful program with several excellent teachers. They are still working out some of the kinks but thanks to the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, the program receives a decent amount of funding.

For us, it is worth the long commute.
