When you take the Salmon Creek exit from the North, you run parallel to the freeway for a half mile or so. As you turn away from the freeway and start heading inland, that is where the mouth is. Maple Hills road (the road to Garberville) connects with Salmon Creek rd. at Maple Hills Bridge.
I was standing on the bridge taking a picture towards the freeway and the Eel. Behind the trees hanging over the creek is the Freeway bridge over Salmon creek and Maple Hills Rd.

For some reason, you’re picture isn’t loading for me. But I’ll come back because I know EXACTLY where that is and I want to see what it looked like after all that rain.
Did you catch the rainfall total for Honeydew? That’s usually the big rain total area.

The bridge by the Gingerbread house, right? So is Salmon Creek an offshoot of the Eel River?

Wow. I hope the creek slowed down with yesterday’s break in the weather. The big puddles on the Loleta Bottoms receded somewhat yesterday. Thursday, the water went across Cannibal Island Rd.
I sure enjoy reading blogs from different parts of the Eel River Watershed, epspecially your blog, Kym.

When I was coming back from Eureka Friday night a Highway Patrol was sitting at the southbound CR exit because the water was lapping at the outside white line on the Freeway.
Both the CR exits were closed. Yesterday’s slowing in the rain let everything recede though.

The Beatrice Flats on 101 have flooded before. One night during the winter of 1997, I drove through water to Eureka for a rehearsal that I was conducting. I should have cancelled the rehearsal. Eventually that evening 101 was closed and I could not get home. I spent the night at a little old lady’s home. Several of my choir members worked for CalTrans. One called me at 5AM to tell me the road was open and I could get home now while the tide was low. The little old lady insisted that I have breakfast before I left. By the time I got out of her gated barricade and down to the CR exists, the road was closed. I had to wait in Eureka until 2:30 in the afternoon, before the road was opened again. However, there were folks stranded on the south end of Beatrice Flats that got to know Fortuna for the day, too.

I have noticed it has flooded when the tide is low, too. There has been some work done on Salmon Creek (the one that empties into Humboldt Bay near Hookton Rd.), but I have noticed that area has been flooding more often the last few years.

I hope it’s loading now Jen. I haven’t heard Honeydew’s rainfall. I know my parent’s on lower Salmon Creek have about 45 inches.
Aunt Jackie, yea the Salmon Creek is a tributary of the Eel and it comes in right at the Gingerbread House.

Thanks, Carol, I do too.

CR exit – sorry for the typo

I thought it flooded there when the tide was high but when I went into town and the CR exits were blocked the tide was low.

My husband who is an engineer/project manager for CalTrans says that a property owner upstream took out a dike and that is causing the new problems.
