Busted

When you are a teenager in a small town, you soon learn you can’t keep secrets from your parents.

Or, maybe that was just me….

I remember pretty much the one time in my life when I got a little wild and ended up played strip poker in the L…n’s livingroom (honest, Diane, I wouldn’t ever do it again—you did know your kids had a party or two, right? And I was over 18-–by a few months).

Poker isn’t my best game. I lost my shirt. Literally! And exited to the hot tub before my blouse hit the floor.

The next day, my dad eyed me sternly and told me that his friends who lived next door to the L…n’s had almost called the police. “Honest, Dad, it didn’t get crazy.”

He lowered his eyebrows at me and said, “I heard you went skinnydipping.”

My mouth fell open, “Buttt, iiiittt wass… uh, you know, just for a sh..sh..short bit. I … lost at strip poker and I had to…uh… you know…”

From the look on his face I knew he had just been joking. I hadn’t been in trouble before but now I was truly busted!

Me and my big mouth.

I wish I had been–speechless, that is.

And ‘busted’ was just the naked truth….

LOL. I still remember when my Dad caught me smoking. He scared the crap out of me and I didn’t start smoking until I was twenty-nine.

Heh. No matter how many times I tried to explain to my sibs, “Keep your mouth shut, you’re killin’ yourselves,” they just never got the hang of it.

I learned the first time. There was this bottle of Wild Turkey, y’see…

I let my “best friend” convince me to have a party one time when my parents were out of town. Even Berkeley is a small enough town that they heard about it through the parental grapevine even before they had left. I was totally busted and had to go with them. I heard there was an endless line of cars on our block, circulating looking for the party and places to park. Bummer!

Max, I can bare-ly believe that you would threaten me with a Siren call.

Jen, My dad’s scarier than yours. I still haven’t played strip poker again!

Mom, just ask Dad, I’ll bet he remembers and you were there. I have never forgotten this. But its good to know that it isn’t seared into your mind as the moment your daughter went bad.

I want to hear about the Wild Turkey, Lou!

Believe me Chris. Having been to a party like that (at a tourist motel closed down for the winter no less) you’re glad your parents caught you before the party not after they saw the damage to your house!

Too true, Kym. It all worked out for the best. It definitely showed me that I couldn’t trust my so called friend who did everything short of taking out a television spot to advertise the party. This was a valuable lesson in itself.
