Dumbledore: Taken on an Outing
Yesterday, JK Rowling, outed the headmaster of Hogwarts. Yes, Albus Dumbledore is gay reports Time Magazine online. To a packed Carnegie Hall, the famous author of the Harry Potter series calmly announced that her well-known wizard had fallen in love with Gellert Grindalwald in his youth. Dumbledore later had to defeat Grindalwald because of the other wizard’s dealings with Dark Magic.
Already fans are scrambling to add the new information to their understanding of the Potter world. Entries at Wikkipedia have quickly been altered to reflect the new data. With this new character twist, Fan fictions are sprouting up online.
The richness and depth of Rowling’s characters keep tantalizing us even after the last book is published.

My first response is “Woo Hoo!!! Great! Equal opportunity for beloved fictional characters!”
My second response is, “Aw man, something else for those Witch-Hunting Book-Burning extreme rightwingers to gripe about!”

I had the same first response as you did.
Then I followed the Dumbledore tag on wordpress….
Now, I see that you instinctively realized the reaction of the rightw(r)ingers. Such Weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth. My lord, who are these people? Some bloggers claimed that they felt betrayed and would never read again.
Sigh.
I feel sad.

Sometimes I’m sad & sometimes annoyed (ok, and right now, a little peeved) that people would deprive themselves of pleasure or knowledge just to uphold some Victorian value system that seems unrealistic. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! There are gay people everywhere, and you more than likely deal with them everyday whether you acknowledge it or not and they are NOT all out to convert the world to homosexuality – they’re just trying to be contributing members of society like the rest of us. WHY should they not be portrayed in literature to an accurate ratio that they are in society?
p.s. All you Victorian values upholders: It’s too late for HP. Time to find something else to burn & ban.

I’ve been searching for some gay commentators’ response. This one from Pixiedyke, while a bit of a rant, is pretty thorough.

Well, the blogosphere is full of reactions like this…

*I* was surprised! But I’m not dismayed. I think it’s fine that it never came up before, because even though it certainly does explain some minor story points and adds to the depth of the character, it’s not central to the story. Bravo to Jo for not revealing it until it needed to be known (like when she was asked) AND for having the integrity to reveal it at all.

I agree with one of your readers who commented that Dumbledore’s sexuality isn’t addressed in the book for the same reason Dean Thomas’ race isn’t addressed. It isn’t important. (She also does that with the Patel twins and Cho Chang.)
I loved that aspect of her story.

Yes, good one.;>
And, why do people get their panties in a bunch over stories? Cause they are afraid of anything that challenges their world view. And that’s why I read stories. I want to see a different world or a different perspective on the world. If I don’t like the story, I just don’t read it. There is no need to ban it.
